Female pollies call for Sam Newman's head

3/08/2008 7:09:00 PM.  | Michael Kotevski

Australia’s top female politicians have called on Channel Nine to sack sporting identity Sam Newman for his latest degrading statement about women.

The controversial Melbourne AFL commentator has found himself in the firing line following an unsavoury comment he made about Tasmanian MP Paula Wriedt last week.

The comment in question was Newman’s invitation for Wriedt to appear on The AFL Footy Show - Newman said “worthy of coming on, her” - the sexual connotations immediately triggering the wrath of women.

A number of female ministers from Victoria as well as other politicians and sports identities have voiced their disgust over Newman’s alleged on-air sexist jab.

Australian Labor Party Senator Patricia Crossin said Newman sets an example that ought not be followed by footballers.

“He is everything modern footballers don’t want to be… an embarrassment to his own peers.”

Federal Liberal MP Bronwyn Bishop told News Limited that the comments went too far.

"We are a free country and I guess people want Sam on television," told News Limited.

"It's a rough and tumble show, but Sam went too far."

Newman has maintained his comment - "worthy of coming on, her" - was not sexual in nature and his employers have supported Newman’s stance that he simply used an unorthodox sentence in expressing his delight for having MP Wriedt back on the show.

Tanya Plibersek, Federal Minister for the Status of Women added that Newman's comments were offensive to women.

"No matter what women achieve, some people apparently still see them as sex objects," she said.

If anyone who has been offended and who can't find the on/off switch, or can't find the channel changer, just let me know, and I'll see if I can help you to never ever ever never be offended ever ever again! Promise!

Why does anyone watch the Footy Show? I don't get it. Who is Sam Newman? What does he do? It must be important because I keep seeing his name and his photo in the Melbourne papers. Yeah right, as if appearing like a rash all over the dailies makes anyone important. I don't read about him but it gets to be a lot of pages to turn. Who could possibly give a stuff anyway???

Jan, it must be VERY important, because Kevvie has taken an interest! Wouldn't you think that running the country was MORE important than commenting on a TV show?

I don't read about Kevvie either. Life is too short to be permanently depressed and irritated.

I'm an elderly (old) female who at times briefly checks out the Footy Show (my normal diet is ABC & SBS). The dreadful Sam is fun - star and drawcard of the Footy Show! Aggrieved and vocal females shouldn't forget that he himself is a sex object for many female viewers of whatever age ;- ) If women today can't learn to laugh at and - imore mportantly - deal with, the excesses of people like Sammie, they have a very hard row to hoe ahead. And they do nothing to help the cause of women.

Sad to see comments - particularly from women - that Sam's comments are all a bit of fun... Im a 24 yo fem professional & until recently I thought radical feminism was outdated. I have male siblings, grew up in a mostly egalitrian house, went to a mixed school and experienced no real discrimination (positive or negative) at university. Then I joined the workforce & (much to my dismay) discovered that the 'old white boys club' is VERY real. Sad to see its alive and well at the Nine network.

I'm no fan of footy or the footy show or even Sam Newman... But I understand aussie blokes messing about, having fun and being crude and a little sexual innuendo never hurt anyone. If you're offended by anything a doofus like Newman says, you have issues anyway... "worthy of coming on (the show)" get it? Look, women, just stop watching if you're so far out of your league you're offended. This isn't an offensive show in the least, its juvenile at best. Let them act like boys at the footy!!

Judy s. of Adelaide says it perfectly. Australia is in danger of losing it's identity completely very soon. Once upon a time Sam's comments would have brought a laugh to men and women alike. A time when we could all poke fun at each other and enjoy a giggle. Sadly like so many other issues today, political correctness madness is destroying our unique Aussie character.

You people need to get lives, You have become whinges. You sound like Americans. If you cant take the jokes then dont watch it. But dont think that you have the right to make judgement on people who do enjoy the footy show. Sam makes more people laugh than he offend.

Sam Newman is an entertainer. He is on the TV as an entertainer. So, there is another so alleged slur that's been beatup. It happens. As for the pollies. Get on with your jobs and butt out of entertainment because, I can assure you all, none of you are any good at entertaining. Most are not even good at your so called public service jobs. Start work on our schools, hospitals, aussie teachers, aussie doctors, our elderly welfare, indigenous peoples rights and welfare, state schools, unis etc.

Come on women of Australia. I mean we have NO problem with Mr Big on Sex and the City. What is the difference?? We can objectify men, but if they do it to us we can't hack it and cry foul? Do we really want to be that hypocritical and precious that we can't even take an obvious joke? Come on women - this is making us look ridiculous. Get over it!

All these comments about the sexual nature of Sam Newman's comments entirely miss the point. As disgusting as they may be if seen in that light, it is the fact that Newman seems to think it is appropriate to make comment based on the fact that he presumably regarded Ms. Wriedt as an attractive woman. I can't for one moment believe he would be suggesting they invite Ms. Wriedt on The Footy Show purely for her insighful comments on the game!

For goodness sake, did Ms. Wreidt actually make a complaint? She looks a pretty competent & capable person to me, and are not M.P.'s thick skinned anyway & can handle anything. As for all the other ladies jumping on the bandwaggon & waving their feminist flags....get a life. I think you're all reading between the lines. Have a nice day all of you.

Judy I am from your gen, old, but oh how I agree with you. The precious princesss inability to laugh and lighten up does nothing for womens causes. Good lawd what happened to understanding when an aussie larrikin is being just that, a larrikin. I work with young women of today and im often astounded at how little it takes to offend them, now it seems they are the ones with the double standards, often seeing nothing wrong in makein demeaning comments about men.Learn to laugh girls, sheeeeeesh.

Come on, really, this truly is political correctness gone mad. Then you get all of these trumped up politicians putting their two cents in, trying to win political points. It's ridiculous. The show should be taken in good humour; as it is intended. I agree with others who say if you don't like it change the channel. And as for Sam losing viewers, he is the show's main ratings draw!

Get a grip ladies. If female politician are so easily offended then they are in the wrong game. These ageing feminists give voice to a comment that would probably have gone mostly unnoticed.

Monday, 04 August 2008

Scott, you call these women aging, now I find that offensive, and I am old and have no problem with Sam. These YOUNG women are not true feminists, they have no idea what it is to have no equal pay, or equal rights, I do. I havnt forgotten how to laugh though, these YOUNG women need to AGE i would say, they might get a sense of humour, aging is a good thing, read the above posts from AGED women. Girlys get a life and grow up, if Sam is all you have to worry about, your not busy enough.

Perhaps old Sam is taking a trip down memory lane. As one of the most common medical drawbacks of Sam's prostate op, would be to accomplish the very deed that he is eluding too...he would tend to struggle in just about all areas of that department nowadays!!.....anything for a reaction i guess Sam!

Astounding that this just goes on and on. as in a previous post of mine i say again, i work with young women 35 yrs and under, and this holier than thou sam is such an awful person, amazes me. Every day i hear young women discussing their conquests, much in the same manner of the "old white boys" clubs of my young years, and yet now they have suddenly become offended, by a remark taken out of context by 2 of their same age males. There is no such thing as a feminist under 35, you have it all.

It seems to me he didnt mean the coming on comment sexually, but the reason people jumped to that conclusion was because a moment earlier he was obviously drooling all over her and inviting her on the show for sexual reasons. Its still stupid, but blown out of proportion. The footy show is a dying dinosaur for suburban dimwits anyway. Uggg. Insert homophobic slurr. Boof. Chicks. Chicks. Ugg. Footy. We're not gay. Ugg. Ugg.
