Tasmanian MP Paula Wriedt has been rushed to hospital following a medical emergency.
Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett would not reveal the nature of the emergency but said Ms Wriedt would require "a period of treatment and recuperation".
"Paula was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital by ambulance a short while ago as the result of an undisclosed medical emergency," Mr Bartlett said this afternoon.
"I am not in a position to speculate on the nature of her admission.
"It is clear that in the short-term, Paula will be unable to perform her duties as a minister."
Mr Bartlett said he would take on Ms Wriedt's roles as minister for economic development and tourism.
He said Ms Wriedt's family would make a statement in due course.
Ms Wriedt was last week the subject of a ribald comment made by controversial television personality Sam Newman on the Nine Network's The Footy Show.
Newman was forced to apologise to Ms Wriedt who said his comment were "stupid".
