Todd Carney sacked by Raiders, banned by NRL

The Canberra Raiders have torn up the contract of Todd Carney, whose career in Australia seems over for now after the NRL deregistered the player for 2009.

Canberra chief executive Don Furner said the board arrived at the decision this morning following a series of off-field behavioral issues with the representative halfback.

“The board decided they had had enough,” Furner told reporters this afternoon after releasing Carney from his $400,000 a year contract.

Carney met with the board this morning in a bid to have a suspension imposed for the remainder of the 2008 season revoked.

The controversial playmaker was handed a five-point ultimatum last week, which stipulated he would have to undertake counselling, go on an alcohol ban until 2012 and remain suspended from playing until 2009.

“The board met and discussed Todd with his manager and they were granted the request to put his case to the board, and regrettably the board after deliberation chose to terminate his contract today,” said Furner.

“They felt they had given him enough chances and that he could continue no longer.

“The decision was made that he had plenty of chances over his time with the club, and with his behavioural issues the board decided that they had had enough and that’s what they came up with.”

NRL boss David Gallop backed the Raiders’ stance on the troubled star, and said the league would not allow Carney to join another club next season.

“Canberra has acted professionally throughout their handling of Todd Carney’s off-field issues,” Gallop said today.

“The plan they put forward is one that we supported and which appeared to provide genuine support for the player as well as a disciplinary aspect.

“This isn’t a situation where we could allow another club to benefit by gaining access to Todd’s services next season. It’s hard to imagine how such an outcome would benefit the player or the game.

“If Todd can address his issues – and support services will remain available to him to do so through our counselling and welfare programmes – then we would reassess his position for the 2010 season.

“We are not in a position to prevent him from going to other competitions, we are simply setting a clear standard about what will be tolerated in our competition.”

Furner said the club is willing to assist Carney through his rehabilitation including funding for any counseling services or rehabilitation plan.

This young man hasn't learnt from his mistakes and obviously doesn't WANT to. I don't believe there should be three strikes before you're out. First offense, depending on the seriousness, should be a large fine AND a warning and then shown the door thereafter. If anyone has reached the age of, say 20, and doesn't know right from wrong, he/she needs to take a serious look at themselves and where the consequences of their behaviour are taking them.

The NRL must cut this kind of fool from its ranks. The players and clubs hopes of attracting any form of sponsorship depends on it. Imagine if some company had been a "third party sponsor" for this player. They would now be in full damage control. Players cannot complain about poor earnings and simultaneously act like morons in public.

This must be what Gallop was on about when he was talking about the "Sanctity" Of a CONTRACT.IMHO, the clubs need to wake up to themselves. If they want to employ Kids and throw 100,000+ Salaries, they should employ mentors to keep them on track too. 3days/wk for work and all that money will lead to issues.Whatever happens the NRl must realise it cant have it both ways, either a contract is binding or not? As for deregistering Carney, doesnt that go against the freedom of TRADE rule? Utta JOKE!!

If canberra dont want him to play for them he should be able to go on the player market asap. Personally i dont care what he does or doesn't do in his own time. I only care how he plays. For Gallop to stand alongside canberra and delist him is a rather Hypocrictical, Then perhaps when Gallop says he wants "Sanctity" of Contracts he really only means for the CLUBS benefit and NOT the PLAYERS. This Irks me more than SBW walking out and gives me an insight as to why.

What you care about "personally" matters not at all. The players contracts, quite rightly, have a code of conduct in them. He represents the club, and the NRL whenever in public. If he is so foolish as to continually behave so poorly despite warnings, we can all do without him.

Maybe so, however the league cant and never will have it all thweir own way. If a contract is a contract that HAS to be Honoured, As gallop is bleating about in the press, then they NEED to work it out. Whether that means he does a few yrs in reserve, then so be it. The media reported this lad agreed to all asked bar the standing down for the season. Canberra dont want to see him go else where , mentor him and use him in reserves at lower income will do more good than pushing away. =)

You don't seem to understand. The contract has been broken. But not by the club. The player has broken the contact by failing to comply with the code of conduct provisions. That is why both the club and the NRL were able to act as they did, and why the player is not in a position to fight them on a legal basis for breach of contract. He obviously thought he was in a stronger bargaining position, by disputing the club's original proposal.

How ironic that "Local Liquor" is one of the Raiders sponsors.

At the end of the Mick, these people are Footy Players, and young kids turning into MEN. They play the HARDEST Body Impact game going. They have emerge from a drinking and ( so called) hard ass Culture. If a Company is going to sponsor the Team one would think they're aware of the risk. I dont condone his behaviour but I wont say its not a surprise either. I also believe clubs would do better by dropping players into lower grades for awhile to bring them back to earth. Cut them, They'll run.=)

About time a club stood up for its fans and players and stopped making exceptions for star player. The sooner we get those kind of players out of the game Rugby League can start to rebuild its reputation as the greatest game in Australia.

RIADERS made a huge mistake & prove maybe SBW did the right thing?? They proved that a contract is nothing not worth the paper its written on. To tear it up with no negotiation? Todd could have been dropped to Souths Logan for the rest of the season. They have ruined a young mans life? I hope they sleep well. Raiders still have my support but Todd Carney does to where ever he may go. Chin up Todd we haven't seen the last of you, I just hope one day u find it in ur heart to be a Raider again

They gave him far too many chances and opportunities all of which he declined until they were left with one option of tearing up his contract. He was offered rehab and the chance to play next season and he turned it down so they tore it up which I agree with. It would be the same as any employee who did something incredibly bad - he was fired. Unfortunate as he was a good player but he brought it on himself by acting the way he did and taking it for granted
