Campaign against Iemma ends

9/08/2008 5:33:03 AM.  |

The campaign to dump NSW Premier Morris Iemma has been officially ended by his own MPs, with a declaration of support for him.

The Saturday Daily Telegraph says Mr Iemma met four senior MPs representing Left and Right factions after a meeting of the party's administrative committee on Wednesday, where they told Mr Iemma the caucus was now unified behind him.

The paper says the caucus decision to reject a push by the Labor Party and union bosses to jettison Mr Iemma stalls the plans to replace him with Water Minister Nathan Rees, which can only be done by caucus or a ruling from a Labor Party conference.

Deputy Speaker Tony Stewart, Whip Gerard Martin, right faction convenor Tanya Gadiel and left-winger Dr Andrew McDonald held a secret hour-long meeting on Wednesday afternoon in which they pledged their support for the leader.

"We made it very clear we are there to support Morris," Mr Stewart told the Telegraph.

The issue of power privatisation was not raised at the meeting.

Mr Stewart said all MPs were meeting the premier to discuss their concerns and report back from their electorates about problems besetting the government. The issue of roads was one of their major concerns.
