Escaped 'giant poo' causes chaos

12/08/2008 9:04:00 AM.  | Annika Burgess

A giant inflatable dog poo has caused chaos, breaking windows and pulling down power lines, after it flew away from an outdoor exhibition.

The artwork by American artist Paul McCarthy blew away from a Swiss museum, living up to its title, Complex Shit.

It was carried 200 metres, leaving a trail of destruction, and breaking windows at a children’s home.

The safety system installed to deflate the giant poo in this kind of incident didn’t work.

Museum director Juri Steiner said the artwork ended up in the grounds of the children’s home.

It has not yet been put back on display.

So this is ART....Someone must have thaught about this for a long time. "Hmm i feel creative...I will make inflatable dog poo. Seriously, if the " art " world thinks this is "ART", i will in no way alllow my children to study art. I mean " How bereft of thought is one who thinks dog s**t is ART " How pathetic is the "ART WORLD" becoming.

Yes, this is ART. It is ART. ART. Are you really that reactionary, or was that satire?

Nick relax with your negativity about this sculpture. You clearly have no sense of humor or irony beyond that of "You've Got Mail" safe rom-com mentality. What is art to you, postcard- flowers-in-a-vase? You wouldn't let your child 'study art ' because of one irreverent work of art? huh? Are you a Quaker? Paul McCarthy is actually a very intelligent, informed, and credible artist. Maybe you should read more about this 'bereft of thought' 'Art World' before you jump in and judge so blindly.

I swear, this looks exactly like a combination left over by Little Johnny the Coward and his smirking mate Zombie Pious Costello. This is what we would've ended up with had the Liberal Communists won the recent federal election - poo and more Communism.

Gee just imagine kids going to school next day and telling everyone at Show and Tell time how a giant dog poo broke the windows on their house! They'd probably get detention for a week!

Every time something like this makes the news, some Philistine always jumps in to scream "Art is bad! Art is doo doo! No Art for me or mine." Silly people, Art is all around you, in movies and tv and the design of this webpage. It's extreme, over-the-top art like this stuff that is just what it looks like, not all Art. One bad movie doesn't send you railing against cinema itself, does it?

Bubba, you're absolutely right. I'm entirely sick of shrieking idiots going on about how 'if this is art then art is awful! No culture for my family!'

What is even more concerning then the one or two people who jump on the art world for this incedent are the numerous people who jump on those few for their one or two comments. The reaction to the reactionares is just as bad as the very thing that you are criticizing! So just take a deep breath, relax, and laugh at the fact that a: a giant inflatable dog poo was (temporarily) on the rampage and b: that people are actually getting into arguments sparked by said dog poo.
