Poll shows Peter Costello is a more popular leader

18/08/2008 6:13:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens
A new poll reveals Former federal treasurer Peter Costello is by far the most popular choice to lead the Liberal Party.

Peter Costello has been given new incentive for a political coup with a poll showing overwhelming preference for him to become opposition leader.

A Fairfax/Nielsen poll of 1,400 hundred Australians has found 56 per cent support for Mr Costello as leader, compared with 27 per cent for Brendan Nelson.

Dr Nelson's disapproval rating has risen seven points to 53 per cent - the first time a majority of voters have disapproved of him as opposition leader.

How could Australians be prepared to vote for one of Howards mob, this man was behind Howards lies..Costello is a very strange man and I believe it is time he went and take holidays with his mate Steve Visard.

I'm impressed that when the press hounded him and Howard for years about leadership battles they always showed a united front. Everytime they said Howard would retire for Costello, they never did. Then they announced before the last election they would run together, & when they lost, they lost together. He gracefully stepped down & concentrated on his electrate. He then turned down lucrative offers to stay in public service. As for him as a person, why wouldn't I vote for him?

What is going on? An article suggesting people would be stupid enough to vote for Costello and no posts from the super duo? Is the hammer and sickle light not shining onto the clouds as a beacon to our saviours? Where are you Super Westie Leftie and your faithful side kick Der Muppet? The World needs you before it is too late!

Of course Runawaycrybaby Costello is the most popular leader for the Liberals, we have known that for ages, but he is the best of the bad bunch, I mean Nelson, next best, is appalling and Spinbulldung is the flip flop man. But what an appalling leader of the country Runawaycrybaby would be, he is a bigger coward than Howard was. In a crisis Runawaycrybaby would burst into tears crying "I want my mommy." What this shows is the lack of talent in the entire Lib party. Just a bunch of losers really.

Graeme Henderson-Graeme Henderson-Howard and Costello have a proven track record and if the people of Australia were to give Costello a go as Prime Minister he will, as he has done before, lift us out of our economic malaise that the wax eating, pole dancing?, lying know all Rudd is taking us into.

According to Howard;" Andrew Robb told Mr Howard that the coalition was headed for a "train wreck" as he attempted to convince Mr Howard to step aside for Mr Costello"........."But Mr Howard told the minister that while he was pessimistic about the election, he "had more show of winning than Peter" and that history would regard him as "a coward" if he stepped down voluntarily, " At least Howard realised Costello had less chance than him. Or was Howard lying?

Der Muppet that really is a poor post. Please refer to the Super Westie Leftie for your script. Anyway the Libs should all be taking lessons from Krudd - Super Sound bite Man. He is like a rodeo rider. Just's bucks around for 7 seconds then falls on his arse. The sad thing is idiots like you only have that much attention span.

Super sound bite, and he doesnt even make the 8 second ride Mark. Howard and Costello showed a united front, not a faction ruled party with infighting and knives drawn. We forgotten the Latham disaster have we ? His own party bought him down, as did Keating with Hawke.Hawke one of the most succesful Labor Pm's knifed by Keating, who won one term. Seems the pots calling the kettle black again. Does this mean I am a Lib, no, I vote on the policies best for Austrlia and Australians, not celebs.

Must get in before one of the Labor posters decide to accuse the Libs of using a smear campaign against Latham. In fact the smears on Latham and his private life came from the Labor Partys own faithful, none other than Beasley. Read Lathams diaries, he was well aware of the factions who were out to get him inside his own party, before the smears even began. I agree Des, I think Costello does scare the left of the labor party supporters.

Why stop their Susan - It was undoubtedly Liberal party smear campaigns that cost Beazley, Crean, Latham and Beazley their jobs. I did have a slight chuckle when Beazley was adding his expert opinion on the Liberal leadership. A bit like the Captain of the Titanic offering arctic navigation courses. Oops probably shouldn't mention anything marine or sinking when talking about Beazley.

I think Costello did a fair job as treasurer,BUT as a leader he is lacking in the Heart dept.Leaders are born with plenty of ticker and this is Costellos weak point. My view is that after his Book launch he will have to retire as he will have burn't a few bridges with quite a few fellow Libs.
