US Christians in stand-off with Chinese over Bible confiscation

18/08/2008 12:19:00 PM.  | AP
A group of American Christians who had more than 300 Bibles confiscated by Chinese officials when they arrived in China is refusing to leave the airport until they get the books back, their leader said today.

Pat Klein said he and three others from his Vision Beyond Borders group spent Sunday night at the airport in the southwestern city of Kunming after customs officers took the Bibles from their checked luggage.

"I heard that there's freedom of religion in China, so why is there a problem for us to bring Bibles?" said Klein, whose Sheridan, Wyoming-based group distributes Bibles and Christian teaching materials around the world.

The Bibles were printed in Chinese, he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The move comes as China hosts the Olympics in Beijing, where false media reports last year claimed Bibles would be banned from the games. The state-run China Daily reported last month that 10,000 bilingual copies of the Bible would be distributed in the Olympic Village, which houses athletes and media.

In China, Bibles are printed under the supervision of the Communist government. The officially atheistic country allows them to be used only in government-sanctioned churches and in some big hotels catering to foreigners.

A woman on duty at Kunming airport's customs office  said late yesterday that 315 Bibles were found in the passengers' checked baggage.

The officer, who would only give her last name, Xiao, denied confiscating the Bibles. She said authorities were just "taking care" of them and provided no further details.

She later referred questions to the national customs headquarters in Beijing, which did not answer phones on Sunday.

This morning Klein said Chinese officials had shown the group what they said were laws that banned bringing Bibles into China, but that the documents were in Chinese.

"We are waiting for them to come back with the law in English," he said.

Chinese officials had asked the Christians to leave the room at the airport where they spent the night, but Klein told the officials they did not want to go without the Bibles.

Klein said the customs officers had told him that they could each have one Bible for personal use, but no more than that. He said the officers had videotaped them and were insisting that they leave the airport.

"We don't want to go without taking those books. It cost us a lot of money to bring them here," Klein said. "They're saying that it's illegal to bring the Bibles in and that if we wanted to, we had to apply ahead of time for permission."

China faces routine criticism for human rights violations and repression of religious freedom. Religious practice is heavily regulated by the Communist Party, with worship allowed only in party-controlled churches, temples and mosques, while those gathering outside risk harassment, arrest and terms in labour camps or prison.

Whether we agree with the Chinese or not it is their country. If they have advised that the Americans needed to apply to bring in the bibles then perhaps they should have checked first rather than just bring them in as they did. In some ways it harks back to the bad old days when people would go to a foreign country and expect to be able to do what they want because they come from England, America and so on regardless of what the locals wanted.

Good point Brenton, they should write on the covers, "In case of rising sea levels stack bibles and stand on them." I hope they're waterproof of the damned things will be totally useless.

You're right Bill Pollock, Warilla... I had the displeasure of visiting China last year ... I found it to be such a repressed, regulated and downright unfriendly country that I will never step foot on their soil again (even if I won a free ticket)... I used to gripe about our taxes and political system.. but not anymore - I LOVE AUSTRALIA - we have incredible freedom (political, movement and religious choice)... Anyone who thinks otherwise should nip over to China for their next holiday!

china is a great place. interesting beyond belief. they are right to control fundamentalist religions. they can be dangerous and a threat to stability. providing you dont get political it is quite liberal.there i had a great time because i went with an open mind and was respectful of chineses law and culture. unlike the loony religionists.

I don't blame Chinese officials for confiscating all those bibles. Who the hell wants a whole bunch of Christians carrying 10+ bibles per person? Why do they need so many? They're probably gonna hand them out to people on the street and try to convert people. Send all the Christians off to an island where they can rejoice and preach about God, leave the rest of us sane people to continue with our life. Why don't they find something better to believe in - SCIENTOLOGY lolz0rrz.

Folks remember 20 or 30 years ago everybody was talking up Japan and how it was going to storm the world with electronics bla blah, and kids were learning Japanese in school. Now the world focuses on china...it's all media hype. Live long enough and we'll see the world spotlight slowly shift to another country. Wages are rising in china and there are huge internal problems. The place is a dud.

It might not be recognized for what it is, but the world is able to see how badly the communists run the great nation that is China.

Please and these yanks would expect US customs to arrest a Muslim trying to "smuggle" in a similar amount of Korans into the US. At least the Chinese are smart enough to see that the last thing they need "is the word of the lord" and US evangelical god-botherers upsetting the harmony of the population. Take a laptop into the US and customs will copy all the data off it for analysis or seize it completely, depending on how suss you are. The Chinese are as worse and controlling as free world only.
