Who really has the most medals?

19/08/2008 12:18:00 PM.  | Tim Brunero
So you thought China and America were top of the medal count? Well, you were wrong.

In fact they’re coming 44th and 32nd respectively – in the Medals Per Capita count that is.

You see, there are four ways you can measure a medals tally.

The first, which is the way most Australian press do it, is you just count the gold medals a country wins. I’m sorry to say it, but that isn’t a medal count, it’s a GOLD medal count.

The second is to give each kind of medal a different weighting i.e. gold 3, silver 2 and bronze 1, which gives you a slightly fairer comparison between countries.

The third is to count the total medals a country wins – which, incidentally is the way NBC have decided to do it since it became clear it was the only way the USA could rank as top of the pops.

And the fourth is to count the total medals a country wins per capita. And given this is how you can make China seem to be coming 44th and the USA 32nd, it’s my favourite.

So let’s have a look at this. Who are the grandmasters when it comes to the Per Capita Count?

Well it turns out to be… drum roll please… Armenia. Thanks to their weightlifting and wrestling teams Armenia has given one giant suplex to the rest of the world by winning one medal per 593,717 head of population.

They’re followed closely by Slovenia (1,003,856), which is followed even more closely by Australia (1,030,043) and then Slovakia (1,311,187). And India, with one lonely medal for a population of 1,147,995,898, has some serious catching up to do.

Actually, thinking about it, the most fair way to work this out is to get a weighted medal score per country and then divide that country's population by the figure. And if you do that - the ultimate leader of the Olympic Games is...

But who could be bothered?

Anyway, whichever way you do it Australia is top of the pops (and poor old India is struggling big time). The conventional gold medal count has us at 4th. The weighted medal count has us at equal 3rd with Russia. The total medal count has us at 4th. And the Per Capita Medal count has us at 3rd.

So it’s comforting to know whichever way you cut, shuffle, jiggle or bend the statistics the great land of Oz turns up gold… or bronzed anyway.

Thanks for that observation Tim. You have too much time on your hands it seems. This is the first journalistic pieces I've read on the Olympics.Only you could make me read something on the Olympic games. Hate them and not patriotic at all. Hyperthetically, if Armenia was still part of the Soviet Union and if it (USSR) still existed who would be the highest per capita.

Another possibility is to consider the number of contestants per medal. We train our athletes as much as the US does, but we don't perform anywhere near as well as they do. It reminds me of that old saw "There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that get binary numbers and those that don't." or "I taught my dog to whistle, but it just won't learn."

First, gold count is correct as most countries use except the US this time (obvious reason). Second, weighted score is good. However, you are totally wrong. The purpose of Olympics is building bridges between nations, not counting metals. If we understand each other, we will have a better world and have less conflicts. Place your ego aside and enjoy the Olympics and some Chinese culture.

There is no ifs and buts in sports. Only in creative analysis. I don`t even agree that every gold medal is equivalent. Not every sport has the same degree of difficulty.

Well, every time that I have seen or read coverage of any Australian winning silver, I have been assured that it really is "as good as gold". This seemingly applies to no other country, so we must really be a lot further up any imaginary "ladder" than is commonly recognised.

I've always argued for the weighted medal count myself. I would also add that medals won by team sports should be counted by the number of players on the field or court; so if Argentina wins the gold in football (soccer) then they deserve 33 points and USA basketball deserves 15 points (why? because they all get the gold medals and they all worked hard for it). One last point: To be fair to US, the American media have consistently used the total medal count in the past, I believe...

I admit australia is manning up in the games. In the gymnastics I gotta admit I agree with our media a bit...... The judging is just about the same as it always is.... CRAPPY.

God tim, ya have to feel sorry for India. Cricket really should be an olympic sport. 20/20. give india a chance. I cannot believe that people come up with these facts. it maybe a trivial pursuit question one day i guess. very funny though, amusing bit of trivia

USA will always put the situation in a way that sounds better to the country as a way to chance the perspective in its favor. Most countries accept gold count except USA and at this time for obvious reasons. Despite of my desagreement with this american adopted system I think would be fair use a points system. Gold medal worth trhee points, silver worth two points and bronze worth one point. I think this should be considered in 2010.

Not sure where your data came from but an up to date list can be found here http://www.andrewstarr.co.uk/?order=totpop Dutch Antilles has a population of 192,000 and has one medal. That beats all of yours hands down. Armenia is actually 6th just behind Australia in 5th.

I`m 47 so I`ve seen more than a few olympics in my life. I hardly ever miss them...... and I have never seen what has been suggested here...... I`ve always seen the total count and then a breakdown of gold, silver, bronz. The fact is the US is off these olympics. If we had manned up in boxing like we usually do..... however, as I previously stated there is no ifs and buts in sports only in some folks fuzzy math.
