Elderly women to be 're-educated' over China protest

20/08/2008 8:09:00 PM.  | Dominic Brock
A pair of elderly Chinese women who were forcibly evicted from their homes before the Beijing Games have been ordered to serve one year of “re-education” after applying to protest the Olympics.

Wu Dianyuan, 79, and Wang Xiuying, 77, were among the people removed from their homes in Beijing in 2001 as part of Olympic preparations.

According to protest group Humans Rights in China, they applied for permits to protest during the Games five times, but were repeatedly refused by authorities.

Now the pair have been interrogated for 10 hours and sentenced to 12 months of “Reeducaton Through Labour”, the group said.

They were told they will be sent off to detention if they caused further trouble.
