Porn pipped to the post as Google's most popular

The internet is often portrayed as a dark and dangerous tool, flooded with porn and predators, but according to Google's new search analysis tool, most web surfers are looking for a more innocent form of entertainment.

Google's latest data tool 'Insights' has revealed more Australians search the internet for games than adult content, and Australians overall are relatively responsible web surfers.

The tool provides comparisons of search terms over time and broken down by region, allowing users to see not only what search subjects are most popular, but also when and where.

The top Australian search terms for this year so far are: "games", "youtube", "myspace", "ebay", "google", "facebook", "weather", "hotmail", "yahoo" and "real estate".

But while that list looks innocent enough, further analysis reveals which parts of Australia are more 'frustrated' than others.

New South Wales and Queensland seem to be the least high-brow web users in the country, with searches for "porn" more popular there than anywhere else in Australia.

Meanwhile the "news" is more popular than "porn" in the ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Insights, which can also group data into areas of interest, such as food or entertainment, also exposed a few interesting things about the search habits of Australians and the rest of the world.

It has revealed how Australians spend their internet hours, but has itself joined a growing new class of online entertainment.

Insight is sure to join it's cousin StreetView, serving as a digital spade for Aussies looking to dig up some of the the internet's hidden treasures.

Quote: 'The internet is often portrayed as a dark and dangerous tool, flooded with porn and predators.' Yes and the media continues to portray that myth, often for the sake of a cheap story. Plenty of porn, sure, but 'dark and dangerous'? It's 2008 -- time to stop fearing technology like it was some ancient and vengeful god.

I love the internet. its the same as the world. its out there we live in it. we can choose which parts we want to be involved in. but with the internet we control all of it. That includes if we wish to be involved with the darkside. no one forces you. embrace technology, there is alot of learning to do.
