Sonny Bill could be 'greatest convert ever'

22/08/2008 8:59:00 AM.  | Dominic Brock
Sonny Bill Williams could be the greatest rugby league convert to rugby union ever, according to former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones.

Jones saw Williams up close when his club Saracens beat Williams’s French team Toulon 32-27 in a trial match yesterday – and he liked what he saw.

He said the New Zealander would soon become an All Black “for sure”, and said he could eclipse fellow league converts Wendell Sailor, Lote Tuqiri and Mat Rogers.

“Potentially, he’s the best ever convert from rugby league to rugby,” Jones told News Limited.

“Sonny Bill is going to be exceptional as a rugby player. It’s that simple.

“He’s dynamic. He’s very tough. He has enough speed for the centres and, against Saracens, he was squeezing balls between players or around them with great off-loading in tackles.

“He’ll be in the All Blacks squad for the 2011 World Cup for sure. The big intrigue is what route he’ll take to get there in his best position as inside centre.”

Williams played at outside centre against Saracens, but former and current players have called for him to be moved closer to the action at breakaway or No.8.

The former Bulldogs star caused a sensation when he walked out on a five-year contract with the NRL club to join French rugby.

I think it was always without doubt the man was a brilliant football player. His abilities on the field were extraordinary to say the least. What got people's backs up was that he walked out on a contract that he had signed in good faith. Nobody has ever complained all belittled his ability on the field ,the people who have given him bad business advice are really the people at fault but I guess that is now water under the bridge. Life goes on

I always thought he was wrong done by being tossed into the pack at the DOGS. When they played him at centre you could see what he could really offer. Then they put him back in the Pack and he got broken again and ....again.

He could not defend effectively at centre, his lateral speed was lacking. He was constantly injured because he was still growing. Simple as that. Terrific talent but will get bored in rubgy.

The Game, I hear you on the defense but many centres do anyway? Look at how many centers are hiding between a 2nd rower and front? Gaz is example, never home in defense but scores/creates enough to cover the deficiency. SBW if left to play there, in my mind( not important really) After his injuries left him would have been mind blowing. Oh well, He's gone now, I'll just watch hi, in the super 14 later. SBW at inside centre, Now I'd pay a dollar or 2 to watch that. ={) .

I suspect the greatest convert ever was Saul.

I’ve been involved in both games for many years and after speaking to a number of the Ex 1st grade mungos now living in the Tweed and Gold Coast an can tell you that it's rugby league that is boring. It's like driving through Dee Why on a Saturday morning, STOP, START, STOP, START. League has become totally predictable, all players are within 10 kilo’s of each other and yet they still give them positional names as if they all have different rolls like in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, let me tell you

Stan it's strange isnt it. The 2 games seem to have gone full circle and reversed the style of play. League USED to be a fast game. Then they sped it up more, then realised they needed to slow it back down because of play attrition. Union used to be so stop start, I couldnt watch it. Now i enjoy watching the union and am loosing interest in league. If union was to bring in teams from ther Islands and remake the super 14, I could see me not bothering with the league at all.

I think Sonny is not only a gorgeous guy but he is very skilled in the Game of Rugby League and could be also at rugby. He has the strength and the ability to conquer his dream of one day playing for the best team in the world..!!! The AB's. Even if the reasons of his leaving the Bulldogs is unknown with doubts from Bulldog and his own fans he should still be allowed to play the game that he feels he has a passion for. He can do a lot for his home country.
