Abbott voices support for embattled Liberal leader

27/08/2008 6:50:00 AM.  | AAP
Opposition frontbencher Tony Abbott has again moved to play down speculation over the Liberal leadership, saying no-one is better equipped to lead the party than Brendan Nelson.

The latest Newspoll, released today, shows Dr Nelson gained two points to 14 per cent as preferred prime minister in the past fortnight.

But he remains well behind Prime Minister Kevin Rudd who commands strong support at 65 per cent.

Mr Abbott has told ABC TV the latest poll result is discouraging, but says he doesn't believe anyone would do a better job of leading the party in the current circumstances.

Mr Abbott refused to back shadow Treasurer Malcolm Turnbull as a possible replacement for Dr Nelson.

He also refused to be drawn on whether former treasurer Peter Costello might make a bid for the Liberal leadership.

...and still the media (prompted by its left wing base & Rudd's spin factory) try to keep this story alive!

A reminder for Maybury, he only speaks for 51% of Australians ..... not "all Australians". Where are the Liberals "in disarray?" ... they gave Labor the only tax concessions for their budget! Labor does do "has beens" why else do you think pig farmer Keating keeps opening his mouth!

Not quite accurate, Livenews. Abbott added: "under the current circumstances." That's a clever out clause.

Thats right Bolton, Keating was a farmer, which is more then can be said for the National Party knowing that of all their entire parliamentary membership only three have ever been farmers. And these clowns allege to represent rural communities.

Can someone explain to me the labor obsession with liberal leadership. For Howards entire prime ministership, we heard that Costello was going to kick Howard out...then in the later years Howard was going to win the election & retire...it never happened. Then when Howard & Costello did say B4 the last election, the JH would retire & PC would take over - the frenzy happened all over again - claims it was all a trick. Now BN is leader, the pot is still stirring...please move on.

CL the "obsession" is called politics.Much the same as Liberals claim that Rudd will be replaced by Julia. It i'll never happen but its a good story. The Liberals only have themselves to blame re Costello/Howard as Costello and/or his supporters fuelled the fire throughout the last few yrs.The difference between Keating and Costello is rightly or wrongly Keating had the ticker to go for the prize.Tell me your view as to why Costello's memoirs are more important than his party.

Concerned Liberal, I have been asking the same question for weeks now.Careful CL, lest you bring the wrath of Lance Henderson upon you for questioning the media's obsession. Who leads the Coalition needs to be settled, but the constant harping of the media on this makes one wonder when they are going to begin asking the hard questions of the Labor leader.Like "why pick on the parents on welfare, (re: truancy), the very ones who would have voted for you, and the least able to defend themselves ".

CL, It's not only Labor supporters that are interested in the Liberal Lack of Leadership. It is a concern for everyone because it affects everyone. These policies like Kiddy Booze and High Fuel Price Turn A Blind Eye, are purely about the Lib Leadership. Brengun wants to look tough within the Lib Party, mind you Lib Wake would seem more appropriate than Party. Nelson is an incompetent self obsessed fool, very few people like him, but the thing is the Libs have no viable alternatives.
