Qld school cartwheel ban comes under fire

27/08/2008 11:28:00 AM.  | AAP
Queensland education department officials will today talk to a school that has banned cartwheels and handstands in the playground.

Belgian Gardens State School in Townsville has banned all gymnastics activities during breaks to protect students from injury.

Education Minister Rod Welford said regional education officers would talk to the school about the policy today.

Mr Welford said teachers feared parents could sue schools for student accidents.

"I think the decision by the principal in Townsville the other day was prompted by the fact that increasingly we as a community are wrapping our children in cotton wool," Mr Welford told ABC radio.

"Because more and more parents are even complaining when their children have minor accidents.

"I think our generation of parents are mollycoddling their children.”

Ironic when you take into account that Queensland's education department declared 2008 as "the Year of Physical Activity – and their website suggests `handstands, somersaults and gym activities' as ideas for students to send in their tips for staying active." (sourced from Townsville Bulletin, 26 August 2008). I guess it's not just "A Current Affair" where Queensland's schools get a mention (albeit for the wrong reasons)

The principal needs a wake up. The cotton wool mentality needs to be thrown out or we will end up with a generation of wimps not even brave enough to use their names on websites like this. Kids need to take the knocks, a few broken arms a legs, cuts and grazes are essential in developing into real human beings.

Whatever happened to kids being kids, cuts, scrapes and all. I can understand the schools position with the "sue" mentality of today, public liability insurance is through the roof now. Perhaps the parents need to stop being so "precious" and allow their children to experience all the wonders of childhood, even cartwheels and handstands.

Yes throw out the cotton wool mentality. Its ridiculous, but at the same time I do see why the schools are doing it. So what will happen? I say, let the children be children. The PARENTS/SOCIETY/COMMUNITY need to be more responsible and make their children aware of been responsible.

If children get hurt while playing or while been children, than parents shud not run & start suing, different story if its BULLYING etc. E.g.: my son gets hurt, get up dust off , we give him a cuddle & teach him to move on. The teachers have a bigger task at hand i.e. academic purpose and not child minding. We need 2 educate all & in time, see the changes. You may not agree by thats my 5cents worth.

yes ashween but they do other things besides academic at school. maybe if the schools had proper playgrounds for the kids to play in it would not be such an issue. having playgrounds made of the same stuff as our roads is stupid for a start. maybe iemma could stop this poop with the electricity selloff and spend it on schools etc and maybe then we wouldnt have parents suing. just an idea. i wouldnt sue btw
