Former President Bill Clinton has put aside an often fractious relationship with Barack Obama and thrown his support behind the man who shattered his wife’s aspirations.

"Hillary told us in no uncertain terms that she'll do everything she can to elect Barack Obama," Clinton told the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

"That makes two of us."

"Barack Obama is ready to lead America and restore American leadership in the world.

"Barack Obama is ready to honour the oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constiution.

"Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States."

The two-term Democrat President also said Obama had "hit one out of the park" by selecting Joe Biden as his running mate.
