Not on my watch: Clarke wary of Bangladesh threat

29/08/2008 2:32:00 PM.  | AAP
The darkest day in Australian cricket has prompted a promise from Michael Clarke that Bangladesh will never be taken for granted.

"Don't remind me," said the acting Australian captain when the shock upset of three years ago was mentioned today, ahead of tomorrow's first of three one-day matches at TIO Stadium.

Although painful to recall, Clarke said that day in Cardiff early in the 2005 Ashes tour, had instilled in him the requirement to never under-estimate any opponent, minnow or not.

With Ricky Ponting sidelined from this series after wrist surgery, Clarke is determined Australia will not be embarrassed in such a way on his watch.

"In international cricket you shouldn't take any team for granted and Bangladesh is a good example of that, as soon as we did they gave our backsides a kick," he said.

Clarke and Mike Hussey are the only two members of the side beaten in the Welsh capital who will play tomorrow, although Andrew Symonds would have played had he not turned up at the ground drunk.

Ponting rates the defeat the worst of his career, and his successor-in-waiting took from it what could be a defining lesson.

"It's certainly a memory that you'll never forget," Clarke said.

"It's not because Bangladesh beat Australia, it's because we took a team for granted.

"From that day I've certainly learnt that in international cricket you can't afford to do that."

Australia showed signs of rustiness in their sole warm-up in the Top End, a 54-run win over the Australian Institute of Sport yesterday.

But they should have too much power for the bottom-ranked side, even without Ponting, Matthew Hayden (Achilles) and Brett Lee, who was given time off after his marriage break-up.

Kicking off the season against Bangladesh may seem underwhelming given major Test series against India and South Africa await, but Clarke said Australia's players would be desperate to impress given the tough internal competition for places.

With the Champions Trophy postponed until next year, Australia will not play any more one-dayers before home series against South Africa and New Zealand in the summer.

The match is also significant for Clarke's long-term aspirations, as it is his first in charge of the one-day side at home and gives a chance to impart his style.

"This is my opportunity to show the way that I want to lead Australia," he said.

"Be my own person, be aggressive, positive, play attacking cricket.

"I've learned from a lot of people but I still want to be me."

Both sides expect the TIO Stadium pitch to dry and flatten before tomorrow's game, although scores around 240 should be competitive.

The game starts at 10am (AEST).
