Questions have been raised about the whereabouts of Caroline Byrne's former boyfriend on the night of her death at the GAP in 1995.
Caroline’s father, Tony has told the trial against Gordon Wood that Anthony Blanchett, his daughter’s ex-boyfriend had told him there were rumours around a Sydney gym that Wood, Caroline’s boyfriend at the time, was a homosexual.
Mr Byrne’s also told the court, Mr Blanchett once referred to Wood and the late stockbroker Rene Rivkin, as being in a homosexual relationship.
Mr Byrne said he took the comment as sour grapes.
He’s also been asked whether he asked Mr Blanchett where he was on the night of Caroline’s death – Tony Byrne replying,‘no’.
There’s also been a lot of debate over a statement made by Mr Byrne to police, shortly after her death, saying Wood was aware Caroline’s mother had died of a drug overdose in 1991, and Caroline had made a similar attempt in 1992.
But Mr Byrne has today denied his daughter was serious about ending her life, telling the court Caroline’s suicide attempt was merely a cry for help.
