Calls to split Sydney working day

30/08/2008 8:00:00 AM.  | Erin Maher
There are calls to split Sydney's working day in two in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Leading urban planner James Calder says shifts should be split to 6am to 3pm and a second shift from Midday to 9pm.

Mr Calder says the city would be more productive and greener if the working day is divided.

And still no one turns out the lights at the end of shift. Still lights will burn on highways, lighting up the road, just like headlights are meant to. Still the GOVT dept wont install movement monitors in their buildings to save on energy. More crap from the greenhouse brigade to jam down our throats. Me thinks this is road pollitics. eg. trying to unchoke sydneys raods by splitting the drive times.

Pierce, we're going to pay extra for utilities, pay more in rates, rents everything because of KRUDDS new ETS. So yes it would make a difference. XConsider how many Govt Buildings are lit up in every city for security. We pay for that. Movement sensors woyuld only light areas where light is needed, instead of top to bottom. They can do their bit too, sorry, unless YOU think you want to pay for waste ypourself? This would even save on security costs, but No, to easy.

Thats all it is Nick, its not saving anything, we will just have more cars on our roads. be able to have more people working. more people on the trains. employment figures will go up. this will be great for the economy. nothing, absolutely nothing to do with gases

Especially on the SO called day of IT. When "IF our govts. set up a DESCENT broadband system, worthy of the engineering we have pioneered. Not this wireless fryyouband. People working in IT would then be able to shuffle work packets at decent speeds instead of weeks. The amount of transporting this could save would be huge in itself. But no...we cant be too smart or inovative and back or inventions...we have world market for that..so we cant afford to use it. Smart we are?

Dont you just love it LOL. Oh my God where do they drag these genius's from ? Splitting the work day in 2 will reduce emissions ??? HOW ?? Same amount of cars, just different times of the day...Think you might have them pegged Nick LOL. I agree, high rises , govt or not, all burning up the energy 24/7. I wonder if all these genius's have energy efficient homes. Nahh I doubt it, they need all their lights on, electric heaters etc, for the long nights they sit up, thinking up these dumb idea's.

Susan, Susan, Susan....good greif. If you can reduce the amount of time a vehicle is running, you reduce emissions. You reduce that amount by taking some of the cars off the road and spreading their travel time over a greater period of time, thus the vehicles will get to their distinations faster and emit less contaminents. Earth to Susan, look up above your head and see if you can see a light bulb shining brightly. It's a great idea if you ask me.

Yes Pithyed one, if the time is split it will reduce travel time but not necessarily the emissions output. A car cerwaling is not under load uses less fuel than one that is. So 2million cars cars crawling, do they emit more, or less than 2 million under power? mate thisd is called a shifty of sight, from the abortion they call infrastructure, to the abortion called GLOBAL WARMING. Nothing more. If you work 12hr days, do yo travel twice? If people in the big smoke work 12 hr days??

Pithy Pithy Pithy, I could care less !! Tired of hearing about "emissions". If they got their public transport systems running smoothly they could all use that in the cities, but they cant because of the genius's we have running the states and country. Perhaps we should all walk, go without electricity and use candles, cook on the fire....maybe even,... stop exhaling. Its all about paying more taxes...and I dont se the USA signing Kyoto soon, do you Pithy ??

And we can thank Robert Hill and John Winston Howard for the USA not signing the Kyoto treaty.
