John Howard charges back into the political fray

John Howard isn't a man of indulgence but he allowed himself the privilege as he arrived for a gala dinner at Parliament House to celebrate the government he led for 11-and-a-half years.

While he has kept relatively silent since the thumping electoral defeat of November 24, the former prime minister had a message for those who replaced him and the public that voted him out.

With the storm clouds starting to gather on the economic sunshine that marked the last decade and a half, Mr Howard said the economy was doing a lot better when his government was in power.

"I hear (Treasurer Wayne) Swan talking about this surplus, well it's a huge surplus he did his level best for 10 years stopping the former government accumulate," he said.

"The Australian people ought to remember that every turn when we were trying to build a surplus and eliminate a deficit Mr Swan and (Prime Minister Kevin) Rudd were trying to stop us."

The man who ruled the coalition with a firm hand for more than 12 years arrived with his wife Janette and his successor, Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson, for a celebratory dinner for coalition MPs, senators and staff.

Nine months of enforced retirement has obviously been good to the 30-year political veteran, who jousted with the media pack which once followed his every move.

"I'm always happy to be back and I'm happy to be with Brendan and see some of my former colleagues and we'll have a fun night," Mr Howard said.

The Howards and the 300-plus guests gathering tonight will feast on a dinner of antipasto, lamb, salmon and gourmet cheese.

They will hear speeches from Mr Howard and Dr Nelson but one Liberal who won't be there is former treasurer Peter Costello, who is in the United States to speak at an economics conference.

Instead, his former colleagues will have to make do with a televised message from the man who is keeping everyone guessing about his political future.

The uncertainty has added to the instability surrounding Dr Nelson's leadership, but the question of will he stay or will he go won't be answered until the release of Mr Costello's memoirs in a little over a week.

Mr Howard offered his support to Dr Nelson, whom some observers believe could soon face a leadership challenge from ambitious treasury spokesman Malcolm Turnbull.

"Brendan and I our old friends, he's doing a great job and he has my full support," he said.

Why is he a liar? The previous Labour government had this country in deficit. In case you don't know what that means, that is DEBT!, now we have a surplus, or SAVINGS! how is that bad?

Talking of "gone missing" ... things have got tough for Federal Labor recently. Where is Rudd "Gone Missing?" Now that's what I call a great leader! (NOT)

Pesner: Tampa ring any bells? Haneef? AWB? Howard did not create economic conditions, in a globalised world domestic Australian politicians actually have very little effect. The RBA, China, the US, Fannie Mae, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Exxon Mobil - they are all more responsible for Australia's economic situation than the government. In fact, most of the economic prosperity can be attributed to the Labor Government's before Howard. They did most of the significant macro reform.

Good to see John Howard on the media again. Shame they lost the election but that all comes down to the liberal party batting on with workchoices into the election. I still can't believe Pixie Rudd is the Prime Minister ! John Howard and the Liberal party should be thanked for the way they governed and the state they left Australia for the Labor party to take over. Shame they insisted on workchoices otherwise they would still be in office.

Mr. Howard, Australians awoke to your trickery prior to the last election, they also realise that 'we' live in a global economy. You can't force other nations to buy commodities. The best thing Mr. Howard could do is slither back to the hole from where he came.

Sean Ambrose-Far from awakening to Mr. Howard’s trickery the majority closed their eyes to the Rudd spin. He promised the World and the poor’ working families' went for the false prophet. The economy is unraveling already and all the excuses in the World cannot hide the fact. Normally I would agree that past politicians should not comment on current political issues but in this case Mr. Howard has every right because Rudd and his mob of incompetents spend all their answer time in Parliament falsely accusing him of ruining the economy-nothing could be further from the truth. Go get ’em John.

I don't think it is purely the fault of the Australian Labor Government if the economy of nearly every western country is falling apart at the moment. Compared to the UK, Australia is doing pretty well right now. At least I haven't heard the word "recession" coming from Australia recently but they are starting to talk about it in the UK. The liberal patsies really need to blindly stop attacking like they always do.

Adrian Peace-Only the weak look for excuses. Rudd had a pretty good idea about the World economic outlook before the election but he still boasted that he had the answers. He said that he was an economic conservative and that he was the only one providing new leadership and a vision. Unhappily for many 'working families' the vision is turning out to be a bad dream. The Coalition faced many global economic problems but managed always to rise above them. As for the UK is concerned the writing was on the wall when Blair ran out of spin and quit-he knew the game was up.

And so all the ungrateful, lefties with anarchistic tendencies can resist the temptation to come crawling out from the woodwork...Ambrose, Maybury Henderson (where are you?). You guys just didn't know when you were well off. Well, the rest of us did. Well done Mr Howard. To Ambrose (in particular)...may your house decline in value, your superannuation evapourate and your job disappear with this bunch of deadheads that you've elected to run the country (into the ground!)

built a surplus because no money went into infrastructure, education, health, R&D, not to mention a couple of illegal wars, racist interventions, sievx, gst, children overboard, children in detention...oh yeas ...what a wonderful job...

Hmmm, "racist interventions" Johnson ...... protecting children from abuse is racist? On the contrary, I would have thought it to be in support of that race?? What a strange view you have. Your name is as silly as your views!

The state government is supposed to be taking care of hospitals and schools but in NSW they blew the money given to them for those purposes and put us into debt (may I point out it is Labor in power) All this crap about "not passing the buck" by Rudd obviously confused people as to whose job it actually is to look after these things. Also, personally I love the GST it has made things so much easier for myself and my accountant

yeah - cos gareth is such a cool name ???? if it wasnt racist, why not an intervention into ALL child abuse? @ susan lawe below... yes - it was me that caused john howard to commit all his crimes.. what a dropkick you are.. got to comment on every story here huh? onya.

Silly name Johnson, so you agree with the abuse of Indigenous children and don't want it prevented?

I can't believe how many people are blind about the fact the GST is in fact really 10%. People must remember that the 10% tax is applied to a whole range of products and services and that the tax is applied on the retail price. The taxes it replaced where applied to a much smaller range of products and services and were applied to only wholesale price of their goods. Therefore 10% is actually a lot more than 10%

When everyone has gotten over the Howard govt. they'll come to realise they only looked for negatives, everything bad. Regardless of how we individually percieve the time, it was a time of FINANCIAL security in this country. On the Children in detention thing, Ask yourself, as a child, in a strange land not knowing what anyone is speaking, you think youd rather be with your parents in detention, or with someone you dont know, doesnt know you, or your needs? I know where I'd be!

What a totally moronic statement, even from you. Perhaps any children of people convicted of crimes should be jailed with them. Lets punish the innocent. After all, those nasty children have probably been thrown overboard, and are all probably union thugs with weapons of mass destruction and greenies. Best not to take chances.
