Rees promises to stop the spin and 'get NSW back on track'

6/09/2008 1:26:00 PM.  | Heidi Tiltins & Anil Lambert-Patel

New NSW Premier Nathan Rees has outlined his plans just three hours after accepting the top job, saying he's going to have a “red hot go” at fixing the problems of the state.

An emotional Mr Rees has been joined by his new deputy Carmel Tebbutt in his first appearance as premier, having just been sworn in by the Lieutenant Governor following an historic day in NSW Parliament, which saw the resignation of the state’s 40th premier, Morris Iemma.

Mr Iemma quit during a partyroom meeting this morning after his new-look frontbench failed to win the support of his colleagues.

It included the loss of treasurer Michael Costa, whom Mr Rees has confirmed will not be making a return.

The Premier has outlined his top three challenges: the state’s economy, service delivery and the restoration of public confidence in the government.

Mr Rees praised outgoing Mr Iemma for his integrity and courage, insisting Mr Iemma was not pushed out of the job.

"He's a man of extraordinary decency, integrity and honour, and his actions today in resigning the premiership of NSW demonstrate he's also a man of enormous courage," he said.

But he insisted that the days of spin-doctoring are over and acknowledged that the previous administration had left NSW with its share of problems.

"You know those challenges as well as I do," he said.

"Today, we start work on fixing those issues. Those issues that go directly to people's lives, that impact on their lives, in their homes, their streets and their communities and their schools."

Mr Rees said he would work to restore public confidence in the administration of NSW.

"On occasions, the administration has let you down," he told the people of NSW.

"You are right to feel frustrated, you are right to feel annoyed, you are right to feel disappointed.

"On occasions, you are right to feel angry.

"On that basis that I say this to you: we need real change, and that real change starts today."

"Until March 2011, every waking hour that I have, I will be giving you the effort you deserve," he said.

"I will be having a red-hot go at fixing the problems in NSW and giving you the services and the standard of services that you, as taxpayers, are entitled to.

"You have that commitment from me, and you will get that commitment from my team when it is finalised early next week.

The new Premier appeared overcome with emotion when speaking about his fiancée, Stacey, the pair is due to marry late this year.

I'll believe Rees that the "days of spin doctoring are over" when I read Bruce Hawkins and his mob has been kicked out. The spin doctors were Iemma's greatest enemies. Remember "we're heading in the right direction but have a long way to go" The fact is Iemma was never heading in the right direction as todays events have proven.

Mr Rees is going to have a red hot go at fixing the problems of the state ..give me a break ! Does anyone really believe another of the Labor team CAN fix the states problems.is anyone asking to see the states finances, does anyone know the real extent of the states problems, other than the Labor Party under Iemma, and now Rees.I cant believe the people of NSW can ,in all honesty,be prepared to accept the word of ANOTHER of the States Labor politicians.Iemma walks with a pension,at your expense

Having a union background , lets hope that he can also throw out all the deadwood waste of space union organisers who have contributed to workers in NSW being blatantly ripped off.

Interesting; now we have a Garbo as Premier; is this because the Labor Party has trashed this State? How Profound!! I wish Bumbles were there till the next election; this would have totally ensured the Opposition, and NSW of a win.

If this new comer can stop the spin-hes only been in Parliament 18 months-it will prove that the previous lot were even worse than we thought. The people that voted them in are just as bad.

He and Labor don’t deserve to have a go, they have lost all credibility. They have chopped and changed leaders and ministers, hardly any minister has given it a real go in any portfolio, I say this as today it has become evident. Hardly any minister has been in their portfolio long enough to get it right. They are so obviously a waste of space. I think its time to give Baz a go; I hope the majority think so also, watch the media paint ALP as new and fresh, sad as this may get them over the line.

With Rees offering to "stop the spin" (and I saw the interview in full), then that in itself is an acknowledgement of the "spin" tactic used by the Labor machine (both State & Federal). It is therefore high time that our media start to do some useful journalism AND STOP REPEATING THE SPIN AD NAUSEUM!

Rees is going to have a red hot go at fixing the state - Only an idiot like Maybury actually believe this rubbish. Rees tries to make it like he has just walked into the joint. 13 years we have had this bunch. They have wrecked the state and it is getting worse. Sticking in a further to the left moron has the potential to make the problem worse rather than fix it. Stay tuned for the usual run of excuses - How long will it be before the "We don't get our fair share of GST" excuse is rolled out?

Well to further confirm your comments, the left/unions and other similar radicals in Australia, have been wanting and inviting the president of Venezuela, this president openly craps on the freedoms, (economically and socially) of countries like Australia, the unions of Australia love him, now we have a premier from the same batch of left wing radical, he may not be a radical (MAYBE) BUT he must satisfy the left BEFORE he satisfies NSW, as Iemma said in his speech repeated (FOR THE PARTY)

The people of NSW vote for a leader, the Leader later decided to pull up stumps and NSW was GIVEN a new leader who Sucked big time, The Leader somehow pulled the skin over his States Eyes and Won a 2nd Term, Now the Leader who sucks has pulled up Stumps( thankfully for NSW) and in it's Unbelievable generosity has Again DECIDED who will run your STATE. LOL, NSW is totally screwed. Like arent the people meant to DECIDE WHO RUNS their STATE? Talk About Mafia boys.

Good luck to Rees, the naysayers -the Libs- will nay, yet I've every confidence in a man whose garnered the support of what was a split party. It's a shame about lemma though, I say, his calabrese ethics and moralistic virtues were for naught in this world of politics and backstabbing. BTW, thank you to who suggested Barry O'Farrell as premier, I needed a good laugh !

Anthony L - this is a guy who was too stupid not to see what orkopolis was up to. He probably organised Miltons hotel room at the Labor conference where Milton bought a 17 yr old lad to and they stayed in the room together BUT still Mr Rees did not think it strange. LOL at you talking about morals and ethics - this has been missing from NSW for 13 years and idiots like you are too stupid to see.

Anthony L., N.S.W, what else can be said about NSW Labor? We are in a mess, economically and socially, limp economy limp law and order, limp hospitals, limp police, tuff taxation. What are you on about? Labor people are saying we are in a bad position due to ALP incompetence. I ask again what are you on about? Did you grow up in a strong prosperous Australia or did you grow up in North Korea? I ask because it sounds like you think this is all normal. I can tell you it is not, it is a disaster.

Farcical situation, he SAYS he didnt see what Orkopolis was up to Pete...I wonder if you can believe ANY of them, but there you go, they dont go to the people to be elected do they? They just appoint each other...the one time you had to vote them out, last year, you put them back...I would dare to suggest , by the time you get to know the true condition of your state's finances, you will find NSW is financially ruined. Even if the Opposition had been in power, they couldnt have done a worse job.

Maybe he didn’t see Orkopolis because maybe Orkopolis was behind him.

Nathan Rees If you didn't see what Orkopolis was up to why didn't you, it was taking place right under your nose .Not good enough no ticker to say it as you saw it, save the party at any expense

Here we go again. From the NSW Labor "spin book", goes something like this, - In sufficient time before the next election, throw out the last pack of clowns and put in a complete unknown, get him to trash everything that has gone before and admit what a huge failure it all was and promise to fix it all up. Make the dopey idiot electors think that they are getting a whole new deal. This guy is perfect to take up right where Iemma left off. He has no experience and plenty of union baggage.

Premier Rees apologises for the last 18 months, yet Labour has been in power 11 years. However, he tells us that there will be no more "spin". Oh Yeah! He disowns Michael Costa who is busy writing his own version of history as if he and Rees are unconnected. Michael Costa has spilled the beans on the real condition of NSW finances. However, at the end of the day people are responsible for their actions and for their personal failures, not systems. If the NSW Labour Government has failed in its responsibilities towards those who entrusted them in good faith with power, it is a distortion of history and fact to lay blame at the door of federation. The failures are fairly and squarely the responsibility of the individual politicians -including you Michael- who let us down! As a senior manager in a private business there is no way that I could get away with an argument that my failure and that of my predecessors to adequately manage a budget was because the Company organisation let me
