Hummers to help police tackle boozy streets

8/09/2008 7:30:00 PM.  | Richard Maxton
Police will soon patrol the streets in five customised Hummers as part of a plan to toughen up on alcohol fuelled violence.

The announcement follows another weekend in Melbourne marred by fatal late-night clashes at city night spots, with a 24-year-old man killed in a brawl while another man has his jugular slashed with a glass.

The vehicles will be loaned to Victorian police by Hummer and could be on the streets within five weeks.

Assistant Commissioner Gary Jamieson said the beefy vehicles would be used to toughen up the image and increase the visibility of police on the streets.

"The idea of going to the Hummers is that it's about trying to measure visible impact so we've got to try to introduce something which might look different to our current fleet of vehicles," Mr Jamieson told News Ltd.

"We want to be visibly seen and we want to make sure the police out on the streets are recognisable and that we do reassure the public that we're there.

"They are five (at) limited cost to Victoria Police ... it's the cost of fitting them out, decors and lights. The vehicles are being loaned to Victoria Police."

A CBD 'drunk tank' is also in consideration to provide care and treatment to drunken youths rather than locking them up in cells for the night.

toughen up the image and increase the visibility of police....why not smarten up the patrons and try get ozzies to reduce their drinking - is this really 'aussie culture', cause its not very unique and kind of a stupid interpretation of the term

A few years back they changed the stickers on the cars from 'POLICE' to 'Police' to make the police force seem less threatening - good to see that they're trying to get some teeth back.

Better if the Vics had a Royal Commission into Police corruption. Also this is just an ego tripping waste of money coupled with a complete disregard for the environment, but if they need them because of alcohol fuel violence then make sure that the alcohol industry pays all the bills. Maybe increasing taxes on booze would be a good move, but where to start.

Like the Sydney commentary's on this article have any say in this, talk about the 51st state of America. Sydney has more drag queens and Americans per capita in the world than any other. Last i checked a 24 year old died last night so any attempt to curb violence is valid.

Another of Brumbys idea's prompted by his excursion into the streets with the Police 2 weeks ago. Ohhh how shocked he was at the violence, shocked that he saw young people, so anebriated they didnt know where they lived, and the violence was frightening.....lol...His solution for those on the front line ...hummies. perhaps a better idea would be to allow the Police to deal with violence and have the courts actually punish them. Good one Brumby !!

Violent drunk people in public places require some nice location to get over their hangover. Prison for 10 years should do it. We just need some judges with the huevos to deal with the crims in this country.

I woder who is the brain or brains behind this caper. The Victorian Police have enough vehicles. All they need is some type of Govt with balls and start cutting down the opening hours of pubs and clubs selling booze. Can some one tell me why a club or bar needs to be open anytime after midnight. The same applies in Sydney also.

Simple way to solve this would be 1am shutdown of licensed premises. Night club owners haven't shown that they can be responsible so, penalize them by rolling back operating hours. More police to solve the problem? Now, think people, if you were a copper or thinking of joining the police force, would you want to be restored ever second weekend say on babysitting aggressive males fueled with a cocktail of drugs and alcohol? If you joined to serve and protect, you would soon get sick of the job.

They tried 2 AM shut outs Joe, was a joke really, all that happened was there were more drunks on the street trying to gain entry to clubs and being refused. You can imagine the result. Al night trading is the real problem, and they have issued to many Liquor licenses . In Melbourne's streets, the Police face a losing battle , expected to be their babysitters rather than enforcing the law. The present Commissioner isnt any help either. I agree with Happy.

Um, okay, so they've got a big car. What exactly is that going to do in the fight against alcohol? Are they going to run the patrons over? Or are the police just going to run back to their hummer, lock the doors and go "nah nah you can't get me, cause my car's bigger than yours!"?? Please explain how this will make any difference?

I've read in secret police documents that the hummers will be fitted with a turret based .50 claibre machine gun. They will be given permission to open fire on crowds at the discretion of the police officer in charge of each vehicle. Best news is all police who are to be in charge of the vehicles will be sourced from Sydney. Lets see you lot cheer for the Storm down the pub now!!! :)

lol @ Peter. How many people have been shot by Police Aust wide, in the last 10 years ? Can anyone tell me ?.I believe we are very fortunate we have a well trained Police Force. I do not believe Police use excessive force unless it is unavoidable. A few have been found but on the whole, the percentage of Police brutality is small. There is always room for improvement of course, but having seen the situations they are faced with in the Melb streets at certain times of night, I wouldnt do the job
