Newly sworn-in NSW treasurer Eric Roozendaal isn't ruling out new taxes, after taking the reins of the state's economy.

Treasury officials have painted a grim picture of the economy after plans to privatise the state's electricity sector were shaken-up.

Despite scepticism about his qualifications, Mr Roozendaal insists he has the necessary experience to get the state back on track.

“This is a position that I’ve sought, I believe I can serve the people of New South Wales,” he said

“I’ve been on Budget committee for a couple of years and I think there’s a big job to be done and I want to step up and do it.”

But the Opposition claims some of Premier Nathan Rees's most high-profile front-benchers do not have what it takes to manage the economy.

Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell says it is a real concern to have Eric Roozendaal and Joe Tripodi in charge of the economy.

"This [Rees] is a bloke who's not serious about fixing problems across NSW.

"He promises to be different, promises to focus on fiscal responsibility but hands the keys to the economy to Joe Tripodi and Eric Roozendaal, whose only experience with numbers relates to making and breaking Premiers and stacking branches."

New NSW Roads Minister Michael Daley denies the state is on shaky financial ground.

NSW Premier Nathan Rees’s cabinet has been sworn in this afternoon with the member for Maroubra one of several new faces in the line up.

It's been suggested delays in a host of infrastructure projects means the state is losing money , but Mr Daley has told 2GB’s Luke Bona that's not right.

“Any talk that the state is broke – that it’s running out of money – is absolute nonsense,” he said.

“What we’ve got is pressures on our budget. We’ve got a burgeoning health portfolio that’s demanding more money every day and a cyclical outturn in stamp duty revenues.

“Well, welcome to state government.”

Other new faces include David Borger with housing ,and Virginia Judge with fair trading , gone are Micheal Costa , Reba Meagher and Frank Sartor .

11:30 AM

NSW Premier Nathan Rees has finalised his new cabinet, naming Eric Roozendaal as the state's new treasurer and putting John Della Bosca in charge of health.

After announcing the members of the frontbench yesterday, Mr Rees today revealed the allocation of portfolios.

John Hatzistergos remains attorney-general, while Deputy Premier Carmel Tebbutt takes on the climate change and environment portfolio as well as commerce.

David Campbell has been promoted from the police portfolio to the important transport ministry, while Verity Firth takes over education and training, as well as women.

Axed minister Frank Sartor's planning responsibilities have been handed to Kristina Keneally, while Maroubra MP Michael Daley enters cabinet as roads minister.

Joe Tripodi retains ports and waterways, and regulatory reform, but adds the title of finance minister and infrastructure minister.

Matt Brown takes on the police portfolio, leaving his former housing responsibilities to new frontbencher David Borger.

Phillip Costa is minister for water, rural affairs and regional development, while Tony Kelly is industrial relations minister, but also heads the emergency services and lands portfolios.

Newcomer Jodi McKay is tourism minister and minister for the Hunter, while Paul Lynch is minister for Aboriginal affairs, ageing and disability services.

Mr Rees acknowledged the scope the shake-up.

“It is an extraordinary change of the landscape,” he said.

“We recognised the seriousness of the situation we faced. We recognised that the people of New South Wales were fed up with how we were running the place.

“This is about reflecting their desire for change – now – and then making me accountable for improving the services, the standard of services and the delivery of infrastructure services around NSW.

“And at the end of the day I’m the one who’s accountable for this. The ministers are accountable to me and… I’ll be accountable to the people of New South Wales.

“They’ll get a day out of me every day.”

An 'out of touch party' hilarious, I notice that the ALP Website still has the same NSW Ministers faces beaming out over cyberspace, how sad, I wonder how long it will take them to update their site….I guess much faster than it will take them to address the disasterous debt incurred by their predecessors ...watch this space.

In answer to Kathy, from todays (14 Sept) Sunday Telegraph, Ex Premier Carr, sets out how good he was and provides examples of the 'great job' he had done while serving as Premier. I support your view and dismiss those of Carr. Like any good politician, he knew when to get in and when to get out. Nothing new, that just typifies how these boofheads operate.

Joe Tripodi is minister for Ports and waterways eh? That'll make it easy for certain elements to make sure that some people "get to sleep wid da fishes", without disruption. And I don't mean Troy McClure!!

I find it amazing that after all these years the NSW labor party realise the seriousness of the situation. Bob Carr realised this 3 years ago!

Good point Matthew, good point! Boob Carr was the first to jump off the sinking ship, I suppose he'd know if it was going to sink, after all he was the captain for a bit over 10 years.

Is Mr Rudd MIA ? Cannot help but note the questions asked of Nelson pertaining to the by elections and the WA election...but for the life of me cannot find one article where Rudd is asked ONE question on the NSW Labor Party , posing as state Govt, fiasco. Has anyone asked him about his state Labor mates ? Has anyone asked about the NON win of Labor in WA ?

Cant believe it we've now got a GG and a NGG.Somehow I think they are one and the same and its just a split personality thing. The WA election is far from over and the Nats may well side with Labor given the Liberals shameful treatment of them.Has anyone asked Nelson about the LIBERALS non win in WA ? The pair of you are dills.

Susan, Rudd was asked about Iemma. Rudd praised Iemma's achievements! It was reported on Live News. Can you believe Rudd actually praised Iemma's achievements!

Labor has gone backwards by a massive 6.1% and the Libs have gained by 2.7% in WA. I don't think Liberals' performance in this state election is an issue. The Nats will side with whomever gives regional WA a bigger share of the mining boom which has been presided over by Labor. Nothing to do with shameful treatment by the Libs. The only dill here is you, Lance Freestone.

Rees and Tebbutt didn't seem to know the State of play as far as the States finances were concerned can we be sure that Michael Daley knows what he is talking about?.

Hard to believe that the 2nd worst performer after Reba in the old cabinet has been given the states most important job. Does not say much for the abilities of the new Premier and the deputy to make a valued judgment. I feel assured we will continue to roll down hill.

Once again, the solution seems to be by this incompetent NSW Government is to raise more taxes. Where are the taxes that have been gouged from NSW taxpayers over the past 12 years ??? If Mr. Costa knew they were in trouble why didn't he, as Treasurer, do something about it instead of spitting the dummy when he was sacked ?? Will Mr. Rees develop the swagger which was so obvious with Mr. Carr & Mr.Iemma ?? Is it part of the selection criteria for a Premier of this once wonderful State ??

on the bright side Reba Iemma and Sartor is gone, that good enough reson for me to crack open the bubbly, the inexperienced rabble that is now going to decide the fate of NSW residents and their standard of living makes me put it away again,

The NSW government is bailing out the debt by multiplying it, creating a even bigger pile of debt that will have to be bailed out, later by another NSW government. Well welcome to the party its just stated ?

Must have been so brief and hilarious Geoff that I missed it, or they ran it by so fast in hopes no one would notice it.. I still think the PM is MIA.... Della, good question, and one I suggest should be answered before they ask you to pay even more. How will you be sure the new taxes won't go the way of the old, the NSW Govt is , after all, still the same. I am sure Rees must have had some idea what was happening in NSW.

So Mr Roosendaal is not ruling out "new" taxes to get out of trouble. I've got a better idea. How about the Labor pollies get all of their relatives, including wives, partners, girlfriends, mothers, sisters, cousins and old mates from cushy jobs in government depts. and Labor offices. This would save us a fortune . When this is done we will see where the moneys' gone over the last 13 years

nigel williams,- I wouldn't be surprised if they do get back in-all their supporters and several Media people are still saying that we don't have a credible opposition. This is lot of rubbish and it just goes to show how low people can stoop in displaying their political bias.

yep nigel i wonder that sometimes, when no one admits to who they vote for, except for a few on this site. Its like giving the kids just out of school the reigns of the company. dont think its gonna work. oh well jodi mackay said she will make mistakes, good on her for admitting it before she has even started. she has control of the hunter, and tourism phew. argh

Monday, 08 September 2008

Nigel, they have all abandoned ship along with Carr, Iemma, Costa, Reba....I am sure your next election will bring the same labor Party back Nigel, pity you have almost 3 years left. I have heard that line before, "tighten your belts". Mr Frasers famous words, and like Carr and Iemma, he sits back now on a full taxpayer funded pension. Ever get the feeling they are all robbing us blind ?

Oh yes, now new taxes to be imposed on us all from the two intellectual financial geniuses, Messers Roozendaal and Tripodi. Well, maybe these impositions could first be offset by the immediate abolition of the useless, outdated NSW Legislative Council and its membership of woeful politicians. Those remaining in the lower house ought to be given a pay cut right now, then placed on tight performance agreements reviewed by an external private agency oversighted by two eminent apolitical voters.

What a terrible mess this lot have brought to not only the culture, but more importantly to the citizens of new south wal We deserve much much better than this. Tridodi and Della Blockya and although she is part of Kev o7, Blunda, ought to hang their foolish heads in shame and resign immediately. But they won't of course. Why? Because they see themselves as the annointed gentry. Thereshould be something similiar to the 'Storming of the Bastille" over this lot of useless, inward looking gazebos.
