A new survey shows the controversial alcopops tax has failed to reduce liquor sales, but the Government has labelled the research "shonky".
The Distilled Liquor Industry Council has surveyed 480 liquor retailers.
Nearly 90 per cent say their sales have remained unchanged, since the introduction of the alcopops tax in April.
The Government has dubbed its findings "shonky" but the Council's Stephen Riden says it's retailers that know best.
“The bottle store owners…are saying very little has changed.”
Many have also seen customers move away from ready-to-drinks to other forms of hard liquor.
But, Health Minister Nicola Roxon says the industry is only protecting it's interests.
“We would like the industry to start to be part of the solution, not just protecting their profit.”
Meantime the opposition says Labor’s criticism of the research is arrogant.
