Outback town goes solar in the Sunshine State

10/09/2008 5:34:00 PM.  | AAP
A southwest Queensland town will be the first in the state to rely on solar power for all its daytime electricity.

Queensland Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson today told parliament that Windorah, with a population 100, would be home to the state's first solar farm.

"It is a great place, and it is living up to its Aboriginal name as a big fish in the climate change stakes," Mr Wilson said.

"Windorah will soon be the first town in Queensland to use solar power for all of its daytime electricity."

He said five solar dishes had been installed at Windorah and would act like giant sunflowers, facing and following the sun to capture as much sunlight as possible.

In ideal conditions, the Windorah Solar Farm will generate enough electricity to supply the entire daytime needs of the town. Power will switch to the existing diesel power station when solar energy runs low.

Windorah is expected to make the switch to solar within coming months.

Why not run Wind gens for night time? For 100 people its not like you'd need a huge one is it? Are the Solar dishes Photovoltaic? If sois it needed to go the added cost of solar tracking?

The thing is Nick, there is seldom any wind at night once you're away from the sea/land breezes of the coast.

Since the proposed carbon tax has made people aware of the cost of climate change and we are now a lot more sceptical of the whole CC myth, I hope this hasn't been done as a response to climate change. What they need is a micro dirty coal power plant that pumps necessary carbon into the air to combat global cooling. Be brave, people. Keep those Hummers rolling, no matter how expensive the greedy Arabs jack up the price of fuel. The globe needs the carbon to prevent hell (earth) freezing over.
