Bankers fight against proposed pokies restrictions

There's been fiery debate over plans to ban pokie machines with clubs claiming there aren't enough problem gamblers for it to work.

There are almost 300,000 people with a gambling problem in Australia and 40 per cent of all money put through poker machines come from their wallets.

Family First is pushing for radical changes – they’re trying to ban the machines everywhere except in casinos and at racetracks.

It’s a move the party says could cut the problem gambling figures in half.

But hotels are fighting the plan, telling a Senate committee problem gamblers are in the minority and 50,000 jobs will go if pokies are banned from clubs altogether.

David Bell from the Australian Bankers’ Association says a proposed restriction on ATM withdrawals, which is also proposed in the bill, won't just hurt problem gamblers.

“If you impose a one hundred dollar a day limit new technology is going to have to be put into place, that doesn’t come cheap,” he told LIVENEWS.com.au.

“That could cost hundreds of millions of dollars right across the industry and that cost will have to be covered by banks and, ultimately, their customers.”

To parallel a thread going on maccas and fatties I would like to say stay out of it Family First. All problem gamblers have to do is stop gambling simple as that. If the high cost of living due to Kruddflation isn't enough to make them stop then obviously they can afford it. Its our right to spend our cash how we like. We don't need bloody government sticking it's unwanted nose in. If you kill the companies, what happens to the share holders? They may need the dividend to live Fielding you dill.

Ray Pro, Do you think individual Bankers own the Banks, no Mum's and Dad's who buy shares in the banks will be affected. Every one likes to blame the Banks

Debate is what is needed to restore the balance to the pokies industry as it will expose just how deep the pokies crisis goes. The Senate Inquiry into Pokies Harm is aiming to update the knowledge of the problem so that the Government is able to respond properly. Knowing that problem gamblers are unlikely to admit the extent of the losses (if they even know themselves) , the community must debate this.A new website, www.daviidv.com is tracking the pokies crisis with current TV/print links.

As a programmer I can guarantee that a $100 limit impossed on ATM's in gaming venues would be less then 2 hrs works. If any bank wants to employee me id do it for $2000 much less then the hundreds of millions of dollars. Its simply a lie the banks are trying to spin
