Pregnant women turning away from hospitals

14/09/2008 11:15:00 AM.  | Erin Maher
The coroner will investigate a stillbirth after a woman left hospital despite warnings about the dangers.

The mother had been traumatised during a pervious birth experience in hospital.

It's believed the baby was probably killed by an infection.

The case has raised concerns about 'freebirths' which are at home with no proper medical supervision.

The Australian College of Midwives' Hannah Dahlen has told 2GB’s Luke Bona she's worried women are being forced down this path.

“Women often can’t access a midwife because midwives lost their insurance in 2002 and so there are very few independent midwives around now.”

“Some women really feel that the option of birth in the hospital is so unsafe for them that they are willing to take the risk to birth unattended,” she said.
