Tander, Skaife win Phillip Island 500

14/09/2008 5:08:00 PM.  | AAP
Holden's Garth Tander and Mark Skaife have won the Phillip Island 500 V8 Supercar endurance race.

Tander seized the lead on lap 103 of 113 when he capitalised on a mistake by Jamie Whincup in the leading Ford.

Whincup and Craig Lowndes, who were the defending champions and had won the past two Bathursts, finished in second place 1.6 seconds behind.

The Ford of Will Davison and Steve Johnson was third.

The victory broke a three-year endurance race drought for Holden - stretching back to the 2005 Bathurst 1000 won by Skaife and Todd Kelly.

Lowndes' Ford led away from pole position at the start with the Holden of Rick Kelly in second place.

The first two thirds of the race was run in regulation fashion before the field was thrown into chaos by a brief but heavy rain shower which hit on lap 73.

Whincup was the first to seize the opportunity to dive into the pits and switch to wet weather tyres.

He rejoined the field, which was floundering on the slippery tarmac, and managed to reel in his rivals and snatch the lead.

A series of incidents brought out the safety car - the biggest was a massive rollover by Andrew Jones in the Brad Jones Racing Holden.

Jones escaped unhurt and walked away from the wreckage of the car, which will need an extensive rebuild before the Bathurst 1000 in three weeks.

After Tander grabbed the lead he held off a desperate Whincup who was unable to make up the lost time.
