Public feedback on maternity plan sought

28/09/2008 2:42:00 PM.  | AAP
The federal government has urged the public to comment on the Productivity Commission's draft paid maternity leave scheme.

The commission will release recommendations for a universal scheme on Monday, following months of public hearings.

Families and Community Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has urged the public to consider the recommendations.

"I'd encourage everybody, once we've seen the report tomorrow, to have a look at the draft recommendations," Ms Macklin told Network Ten.

"Please, everyone read the report, get on top of the recommendations and come back to the Productivity Commission with your views."

It is widely anticipated the commission will recommend a taxpayer-funded 14-week scheme.

Ms Macklin said she was a big advocate for paid maternity leave but the government would not make any decision until the commission handed down its final report in February next year.

"It's so critical for mothers to have time to recover after the birth, for parents, mums and dads to have time to bond with their newborn babies.

"We know how critical that is for the baby and also very, very important for the new families.

"I'm a great advocate - let's see the report tomorrow, but engage in the debate over the next couple of months."

I hope if we the taxpayers are going to have to foot this bill too, that the Govt will remove the $5000 baby bonus and put it into paid maternity leave for ALL mothers perhaps...Homemakers are workers too ....I would have no opposition to this plan then..but if we are going to have to foot the baby bonus bill as well as maternity leave only for "working mothers" and not for Homemakers..I would oppose it...Take the baby bonus away, one of Howards policies I never agreed with.

From what I've heard about this policy, they're asking for employers to pay minimum wage for 14 weeks. What employer can and should pay for a staff member to take 14 weeks off work while keeping their job open and hiring someone to replace them at casual rates. What about women who choose not to have children? Why should they lose out by choosing not to have children. If anything, this system should work like voluntary super, woman can choose to put some of their wages into an account for this.

Susan I agree. But I also have a question. Who pays the maternity leave? I hope it is not an employer. I think it would be an anfair burden on business. If as a nation we want to do it and everyone pays then fine.

Can't comment till we see the proposal. As for the bonus it was meant to boost our birthrate, so theres nothing to disagree about it is doing its job. As for changing it to materniy leave it sounds like the government saving money by only including working mums hope I'm wrong. How will it be calculated? If it's mimimum wage rates then thats another money saving scheme. Having to pay for IVF ourselves this $5000 would have at least covered our expenses. If it is scrapped then once again BAD LUCK.
