Manly's secret pact - fight fire with fire

2/10/2008 11:20:00 AM.  | Nick Markham | Rugbyleaguelive.com
Manly players have vowed to take matters into their own hands if Melbourne hard man Michael Crocker tries to intimidate the Sea Eagles with rough-house tactics in Sunday's NRL decider at ANZ Stadium.

News Limited reports the Manly forward pack are still ruing their failure to intervene when Crocker smashed Manly custodian Brett Stewart early in the second half of last year's Grand Final.

They're determined not to make the same mistake twice - setting the scene for brutal encounter.

Crocker's hit on Stewart - while deemed legal by the NRL's match review committee - ended the Manly flyer's match, and the moment was viewed by many as the point of no return for a struggling Sea Eagles outfit.

NRL referees boss Robert Finch last night warned both sides to play by the rules - or face the consequences.

"If that's what Manly players are saying, and I take you on your word, then that won't be happening," Finch told News Limited.

"We would discourage any player taking the game out of the referee's hands."

The two dirtiest teams in the competition are the Storm & the Roosters. Fortunately the Rossters are gone. It will be graet the Mnly stand up to the other dirty team in the competition instead of the authorities being too chicken to take action for their dirty play

If Robert Finch has made that statement then tell him to get his referees som balls so they can make the call on the field & send them to the bin or even off.

Robert Finch should go and take a flying jump. Nowhere have there been any quotes from Manly players that they intend to play outside the rules. What they can legally do-according to the NRL-is to try and take out Billy Slater in the same way that Brett Stewart was taken out last year. They can also try to take out Crocker or any other Storm player that provides the opportunity, in the same way. It is not a question of revenge but it is just a tactic which the Storm used, very effectively, last year and could be used by Manly.
