Priest sentenced over child sex offences

3/10/2008 12:11:00 PM.  | Emily Smith
A catholic priest who abused young boys in 1970's and 80's at a Sydney school for disadvantaged teens has been sentenced to at least nine and a half years jail.

Throughout his entire trial Father Paul Evans maintained his innocence, only admitting to rubbing the backs and necks of those who were in his words, ‘in need a bit of TLC.’

But a jury has found otherwise, declaring him guilty on 18 charges.

Evans assaulted the seven boys, some as young as 13, while they were on camping trips, or in their dorm rooms at Boys’ Town in Engadine.

His victims were in court today to hear him being sentenced to a maximum 15 years in jail.

After the sentence was read out, people in the court clapped – some yelling to Evans ‘rot in hell’.

Fr Thomas Dunlea (1894-1970) founded Boys' Town at Engadine , in 1939 will be turning in his grave to hear that all his good work is undone by a perverted priest. Evans deserves every bit of 15 years jail , I think he who should be hung by the neck until dead. Evans has effectivley destroyed the disadvantaged kids trust in people for life, people whom we all are supposed to look up to and respect. Its good to know Evans is off the street with no parol for 9.5 years. I hope he goes to hell.

Oh, John, for crying out loud. Hung by the neck?? All he did was fondle some boys, for God's sakes. It's not as if he murdered them. And, how do we know that the boys didn't enjoy it. You carry on as if you were the one molested.
