Welfare addiction and the politics of stupidity

I've had a lot to say this week about this whole question of greed and waste. In other words, how many people are receiving money from Government to which they're not entitled? And when is an end going to be put to this welfare mentality.

In other words, surely in this economic climate the time has come to lower the boom on expectations, asking government to do everything imaginable for us.

Government will pay for maternity leave.

Government will pay for child care.

Government will pay for health care.

Government will pay for a university education.

Government will pay to keep the car industry alive.

Government will subsidise by 80 per cent public transport.

It goes on and on.

Well, government has no money - never have - other than what they steal from us. Which prompted one correspondent to say this, "Alan, this is not a case of sour grapes.  I'm financially comfortable, pay for private school fees and my medical, as I should.

"I know a lady who's had a tummy tuck, courtesy of Medicare, at the North Shore Private Hospital.  Now I'm uncertain of whether she paid for the room costs but I am certain the surgeon billed the approximate 15,000 dollars to Medicare.

"Reason being, she could.  And apparently as she's had twins after the birth of her first, she can claim this operation on Medicare.

"The operation was for vanity reasons only.  This I assure you.  All this money spent on a lady who could afford private school fees, a beach house, a rather grand home on the lower North Shore, investments, overseas holidays and the like.  Plays golf daily and wasn't happy with the loose skin on the tummy.

"She's a size 6 to 8 and very well maintained.  No health issues at all.  If I could remember the name of the surgeon I'd gladly pass this on to you but I cannot.

"I've been disgusted by this for the last one and a half years or thereabouts, and I listen to you daily and agree with user pays for medical, for all the obvious reasons, well to you and I at least.

"So many people are struggling, and this waste of money is utterly disgraceful, particularly when associated in such a way with a surgeon who must be aware of the mess in our hospitals.

"What on earth is going on?"

Well may we ask what on earth is going on, and I'll tell you.

In the last 48 hours, 34 surgeons have leaked a letter pleading with State and Federal Labor Governments to deliver promised funding increases immediately.

58,000 people are awaiting surgery in New South Wales.

The 34 surgeons say without the continuing support of surgeons, massive increases in waiting times for elective surgery in New South Wales are inevitable.

Then we learned earlier this week of a $30 million shortfall in funding at Westmead Children's Hospital.

Families in Western Sydney having their surgical services downgraded because the Government can't deliver on health.

Now a laparoscopic surgeon has withdrawn his services from Nepean Hospital citing a lack of equipment upgrades.

Associate Professor Cheli Varol has said, "I have, effective of this date, cancelled all my laparoscopic procedures until the quality and quantity of the equipment used for laparoscopic procedures is radically updated."

So I wonder what families in Western Sydney think of someone being able to get a tummy tuck for $15,000, claim it against Medicare, head off for golf while they are going to work, and spend a weekend at the beach in their own beach house.

This is not the politics of envy we're preaching.

It's the politics of stupidity.

The reason the health system is on its knees is that too many people are being provided with health care for nothing when they can afford to pay.

And no politician on either side has the guts to address the reality of that issue.

geez. i just had surgery in a private hospital with a surgeon of my choosing. admittly it was compo, but i would have paid for it as it all happened so quickly and i am now out of pain. to have to wait for it to be done would have been years. if you can afford to pay for it yourself do it. stop wasting tax payers money and causing those in need extra time on waiting lists. as for a tummy tuck, that is just rediculous. it could have bough equipment.

This is why private health funds are so essential. It allows those who can afford to contribute to the total health funds available in this country, both medicare & private. That has to benifit all especially those who need public health care. Get well soon, Belinda.

Welfare has become an industry now,and there is far to much middle income welfare as this case shows.Once welfare was a safety net for those among us who were in a difficult patch, meant to support you until you got on your feet.It was never meant to be abused as it is today. The medicare reform being pushed by the Govt will tip over half a million out of private health care and into the public health system. The welfare pit of taxpayers money the politicians dish out is making us a welfare country

This wasn't such a problem when the conservatives had federal office. The states resisted them then. So long as the feds ran the economy well, this could take care of itself. Now when the feds are messing up the economy, spending money to ruin industry from energy to market, the states cry poor. It isn't welfare addiction. The states and feds earn enough money, but the ALP funnel it to their mates, not leaving enough to manage. We are being robbed in daylight hours.

So basically this all arose from an unnamed "correspondent" complaining about what they believe someone else received. But, of course, its "not sour grapes". Could it possibly be the dreaded politics of envy?

If they actually try to fix it though they will lose the welfare vote and unfortunately in today's society there are alot of them. There should have never been this many people on welfare. If we ONLY gave welfare to people who needed it we would save so much money that could go into hospitals, school or anything.

One really must ask just where do our taxes go? "Under French law, maternity leave commences six weeks before the expected date of the employee's confinement (eight weeks if she already has two or more children), and ends ten weeks after the confinement (sixteen weeks from the third child onwards)". http://www.eurofound.europa.eu/emire/FRANCE/MATERNITYLEAVE-FR.htm They only work a 35 hr week, when a child is born the government also provides a nanny to help out around the house.

And that's why the uneployment rate in France is 7.5% as at Feb 2008.

Hey Alan! We could all avoid welfare and take out a David Jones Amex card ..... just like you were talking about on your show today!!!!! Nevermind the repayments, we can all just spend up .... and end up like the U.S of A ! And then we can just bail out everyone with a US$700 billion welfare payment .... just the way the free market works .... just the way Alan would like it to work ... so long as HE doesn't have to pay his precious tax dollars for it ..!

I agree it does seem a bit odd that a $15,000 aesthetic surgical procedure could be charged to Medicare, but I'm not convinced we can be certain of it. From what is said in this piece it doesn't sound like anyone has double-checked the facts. I'm not going to get riled up over facts that I can only take at face value. I'd also like to point out that the Government doesn't pay for university education or all healthcare procedures. Generalisations should not be the friend of an opinion piece.

What I find most distasteful is that government's such as the US have used $700 billion dollars of tax-payers money to bail-out financial institutions for mismanagement and incompetence. It's called Coprporate welfare but don't expect them to work for the dole. These institutions stalked consumers with predatory practices and usury and in Australia the banks are using the future fund, what a joke. No doubt the CEO's of such institutions will continue to receive million dollar hand-outs with money that should have been invested into public infrastructure such as Health and Education.

full employment is impossible within the present system. unemployment gives the employers more power. if jobs are hard to come by, people dont push for higher wages and better conditions. we have a choice. keep welfare and have it abused by a minority or do away with it and get a massive increase in crime, drugs and homelessness. i know which policy i prefer
