Lance Armstrong an 'embarrassment', says Tour de France boss

5/10/2008 9:50:00 AM.  | AAP
Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong has been an embarrassment to the French race, the new head of the Tour's organiser said on Saturday.

L'Equipe quoted Jean-Etienne Amaury as saying that Armstrong has not always been good for the Tour.

"We can't say that he has not embarrassed the Tour de France, as he has had a quite a complicated history with it," Amaury said.

The 32-year-old Amaury was named president of the Amaury Sport Organisation earlier this week, replacing Patrice Clerc, who was known for his hard line against doping.

Some observers interpreted the change as a sign that the ASO intended to soften its position on doping.

Amaury, however, insisted the fight against doping remains a top priority.

"The Tour de France's position has always been very strict and that will not change in the years to come," he said.

"(ASO) is quite conscious of the fact that doping undermines cycling's credibility."

Asked whether a comeback by the 37-year-old Armstrong, who retired in 2005 after winning his seventh consecutive title, would throw suspicion on the race, Amaury said: "Today's tools in the fight against doping are different."

Armstrong announced last month he was coming out of retirement.

Why is it Armstrong can have a say as to whether or not the sample/s he suppied cannot be tested? Whats the point in the whole operation if the test can be vetoed by the supplier of the Sample?

Armstrong doesn't have a say in up to date tests. The tests he rejected were supposed to use 9-year-old samples that were already determined to have been mishandled (and possibly tampered with) and would have been conducted by an organization which has a clear bias and vendetta against Armstrong. I'd imagine anyone would be less than agreeable under those circumstances.

I've been keeping up with all of the negative interviews about Lance from heads of various organizations. I think that this one is the lowest blow, because it's the new family head of the group that owns the Tour, and they probably have the most to gain from Lance's comeback. Take Lance out of the news for the last month, and the only mentions of the Tour would be Ricco's two year suspension for doping, Schleck being investigated for doping, and the wait for results of retests of riders who may have doped this year. None of those would have inspired people to say hey, I really want to watch the race next year. I wish Lance would decide not to race anywhere in France and try to win the hundredth edition of the Giro d'Italia instead. Let the tourists and the publicity and excitement go to Italy next year.
