Australia can weather this storm: John Howard

7/10/2008 3:02:00 PM.  | AAP
Australia is well placed to weather the storm of the current global financial crisis, former prime minister John Howard says.

Speaking about global leadership at the Gold Coast's Bond University, Mr Howard today said Australians should not panic in the wake of the financial meltdown that has sent shockwaves through the world's markets.

"Australia is better placed to deal with it than just about any country in the western world and that is because we have a very strong balance sheet," Mr Howard said during a speech to students.

"We have no net debt, we don't have a budget deficit, we have very well regulated banks ... we also have levels of inflation and low unemployment that compare very favourably to the rest of the world.

"Those are the things that are going to stick to the Australian economy as it gets buffeted and it will be affected.

"But the impact would have been much, much greater if the budget was now in deficit and if we had a huge national debt."

Mr Howard said his government left the economy in great shape and, properly managed, Australia would withstand the impact of the downturn.

Thanks to the good work of your Government. It could have been even better had the Reserve Bank not put up interest rates late last year-they didn't need to. The proof of that is the panic that they are displaying now-reducing rates by 1% in one hit even though inflation is higher now than it was in 2007.

Thanks for sensible leadership John Howard some of us miss it. Lets hope the present government learns from you and Peter Costello We don't need them to get carried away with their own egos. We need help to maintain our rural and manufacturing industries i.e. our selfsufficiencies. Also to reign in spending on personal level.

He still has the well being of the Australian public at heart;even after they committed the biggest act of political Bastardry in this country's history. He could have gone around playing Where's Johnny like Where's Kevvy is doing; instead; him and Peter set us up to ride these times through with sound financial leadership.Flying around the world, getting your photo taken with every celebrity you can find is NOT sound financial leadership. It is not leadership! He is worse than a Japanese tourist.

What absolute drivel. Howard/Costello were fortunate to be in government at a time of a large demand for our minerals. This alone drove our economy. Their "management" consisted in selling off an income earning assets in Telstra, and gathering in more revenue than spending on needed infrastructure, so as to distribute some tax cuts at election time. Absolute genius - not. Our rural sector faces the major challenge of climate change, which was totally ignored by Howard.

Mick S, Howard/Costello's superior economic management began long before the minerals boom. They managed us very well through the Asian Meltdown as well as paid off massive government debt, which serves us well today. Their only mistake was delivering control of the massive GST driven funding increases to the idiots running the states, who were supposed to use it for infrastructure. The Federal Government does not own schools, hospitals, roads, railways, etc.

Mick S,-You have a very selective memory pal. You forgot to mention that Labor sold the daddy of all Government Assets-The Commonwealth Bank and threw in the National carrier QANTAS for good measure. As far as the resources boom is concerned, in case you are not aware, it’s still on. So why it is that Rudd cannot perform like the Coalition? They left him a $22 billion surplus-of course he claims that he did it-what a joke?

The irrational hatred of the far left is always on display, even when Mr Howard talks up our economy and doesnt say one bad word about the dolts in Govt's handling of his legacy of sound economic management. You would think they would have the grace to say thank you for getting us back into good shape after Keating, and keeping us there over the last 12 yrs. Too spoilt and had it too good for the last 12 yrs. When their lifestyle gets harder they might understand what struggle means.

The unlflushable Rodent just keeps on bobbing up. Didn't he say, when we finally booted him from Govt and his electorate, that he would be a dignified and silent ex-pollie, not getting involved in day to day matters. I guess that was another non-core promise.

a narchy the howard gvt did not pay of the fed debt. they brought it down from 96 billion to 50 billion [ over 11 years] by selling off 65 billion dollars worth of public assets. when howard was treasurer labour inherited a 12 billion dollar debt which in todays terms is around 90 billion. costello also inherited 69 billion on unfunded super. good management was not one of the howard gvts strong points

Unlike Messrs Keating, Hawke and Fraser; Mr Howard has weathered the temptation to comment directly on KRudd's incompetance. Nothing is worse than an ex-PM who crawls out of the woodwork and sprouts barrages of negativity all the time. Unlike these other idiots, Mr Howard is being positive at a time when we really don't deserve it - after all a majority of us voted for KRudd. I wish Howard was still in power but he isn't and we'll just have to make do with KRudd and the duds we have now.

were we really better off under howard? you can quote statistics, economic booms etc. but the wealth was monopolised by a minority. most australians thought they were better off cos ''they had more things''. but that was all on credit. it was an illusion. both parties have the same policies so how can one be superior to another? we were living in a fools paradise during the howard years. now we have been rudely woken up.
