'What else can he do?' Manly stunned at Orford Test snub

8/10/2008 1:30:00 PM.  | Dominic Brock | rugbyleaguelive.com
He’s been named Halfback of the Year, won the Dally M medal, and led his team to premiership glory. But Matt Orford still hasn’t convinced selectors he’s ready for Test football, leaving his teammates scratching their heads.

Orford missed out on Australia’s World Cup squad yesterday, as six of his teammates got the call-up to the national team – including rookie winger David Williams.

“I don’t know what else he’s got to do,” another of the Kangaroos debutants, forward Glenn Stewart, told Fairfax. “He’s the Dally M player of the year.”

Coach Des Hasler and other Manly players backed Stewart’s sentiment, as selectors instead went with Johnathan Thurston and Scott Prince as the squad’s two halfbacks.

Thurston is the reigning Test No.7 but saw his Cowboys team finish in second last place on the ladder this season, while Prince’s Titans also missed the eight.

Prince, one of the NRL’s form players in the early part of the season before succumbing to injury, was not particularly confident of beating Orford to a spot in the World Cup squad.

“They’d been talking Matty Orford up and the way he’s played this year, I wasn’t overly confident I’d make the squad,” he told AAP.

Australian coach Ricky Stuart said Orford proved his critics wrong by helping Manly to a stunning 40-0 grand final win over Melbourne, but still could not find room for him in the squad.

“I think Matt Orford’s form in the grand final and towards the end of the season has been some of his best football,” Stuart said yesterday.

“I’ve personally spoken to Matt and talked to him about his footy game. He’s a guy who I saw a huge improvement in… in regards to handling his critics.

“One of those criticisms was performing under pressure in the big games. He certainly showed us he can do that on Sunday afternoon.”

Orford – who is still yet to represent his state or country – can at least be confident he will be a chance to break into the NSW team in 2009.

Regardless of the player involved, the non-selection of the Half-back of the Year and the DALLY M Player Player of the Year in a 26 man World Cup squad, makes a mockery of these Awards. It means that consistancy of performance all season has no recognition by selectors and the Awards might as well be scrapped .

trevor, they may as well scrap it, because after all, it is just a tally of votes from News Limited Journalists, not by peers or coaches.

Yet another stupid article!!! You can't go through the whole selection process and then NOT SHOW US THE SELECTED 24 MAN SQUAD!!! Who cares what Tom, Dick & Harry think about Orford's Omission!

How about he tries to do it for more than one season... There are PROVEN players at this level that have been doing this for years! He steps up for one season and all of a sudden he's snuubed?? Get serious...

Manly players were only picked because they won the final, otherwise the selectors would have chosen other players. The NRL is desperate for publicity.

The current administrators and selectors seem to have jetisonned some of the game's traditions and australian rugby league is not the better for it. People can correct me if I'm wrong but every Dally M Player of the Year had been selected in every Kangaroo squad until Cliff Lyons was omitted in 1994. I believe selectors should return to that tradition of making the current Dally M Player of the Year an automatic selection in the Kangaroo squad.

Selectors are usually a rather conservative bunch that like to go on past performance rather than current form. Not a good policy.

Rod F, the nrl are very sensitive to comments about their administrators, selectors and judiciary,David Gallop is making the NRL the laughing stock of sport in Australia. As for Matt Orford being the Dally M winner.he is there by default.Billy Slater won the dally m but was inelligible .orford didnt choke once and he's now classed as the best halfback in the league(turn it up).The rep bonuses will rip manly apart as did to storm. The nrl should pay bonuses instead of the clubs.selfdestructing NRL
