A 65-year-old Australian tourist has died in hospital after being assaulted at a beach bar in the Indian resort state of Goa, police say.

Indian Authorities have confirmed Australian tourist John Kelly had been visiting the resort state of Goa when he stopped in for a beer at a local bar.

The 65-year-old reportedly became involved in an argument with a waiter over how to pour a beer when he was knocked to the ground and beaten.

Deputy Superintendent Gundu Naik said although Mr Kelly was taken for treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital, he unfortunately died ten hours later.

"He died 10 hours after the assault, while being treated at Goa Medical College and Hospital here," Naik was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

"He entered into an argument with the waiter which resulted in the altercation. The deceased was pushed down and assaulted."

Superintendent Bosco George said two waiters and a security guard from the resort have been detained.

Local media and police are reportedly treating Mr Kelly's death as murder.

Wonder when the announcement is going to come from you know who on the AFP being tasked to wander on over and make sure it is a thorough legal process and there's no cover up of it being a Haneef payback, or maybe Rudd could head on over kill a few birds with one flight, fix up the present Crescent problems the Indians are dealing with and of course catch up to support punter and the lads.

Ordinarily, i would agree with you, RS ****. But, this was a fellow beer drinker and I think I need to defend him now in the hour of his death. We beer drinkers have to stick together, you know. Mr Kelly obviously was already drunk when he got into this altercation. I say this because when you are a guest in someone else's country, you don't insult them in a public place. Especially if they are in the course of carrying out their daily, professional duties. Mr Kelly, you were in the wrong.

Pithy - I definitely don't agree with you - if you are claiming that just because this person was drunk he deserved to be killed/murdered-my comment above for the person who wants an explanation surely you can't be serious -go figure it out-it was meant as scarcasm basically stating that life means nothing if one or two are murdered when overseas!definitely NOT!with the outcome of the Lapthorne case and the disgusting comments that followed this was just to say hey wake up see what does take place overseas and here as well-a life extinguished for a sake of winning an argument over beer!People need a wake up call and begin to smell the roses instead of sniffing other crap!No wonder no one is safe-no one can be as ridiculous to belt the living daylights out of someone and end their life just because they are visitor and not allowed to open your mouth to say anything!Next time a sign saying all tourists beware "don't speak to the waiter or anyone for that matter - it could be your last!Pi

yes we are a hospitable lot here in Oz, unless you happen to be a First Australian, then our manners as guests are brutal on arrival and only go downhill, or if you happen to be Muslim, because we tend to burn down mosques out of fear and ignorance, or if you seek asylum from certain death in your homeland, then we'll lock you up behind razor wire indefnitely.

Darren Carrow: Your comment adds nothing to this forum and I have no idea why you even bother continually sitting on the fence without any views whatsoever but continually berate other people's opinions - If anything Darren you would be no better as you don't allow others freedom of speech - something I still think is allowed in this country or maybe it isn't!If you think by making those baseless statements as you have right now there is obviously no hope for you!Stirring doesnt resolve!

I disagree RS. I think my comments add a lot to the debate. I'm not stifling our freedom of speech at all, just offering a differing view. You can spout off as much and as often as you like about 'gangs of foreigners' menacing good white aussies, and all that will serve to achive is the confirmation of your status of ignorant racist. as Jolly old Jean-Jacques Rousseau said, I detest what you say, but i will defend your right to say it... or words to that effect.
