Broken rib has Crocker in World Cup doubt

9/10/2008 8:52:00 AM.  | AAP
Michael Crocker's World Cup campaign is under threat from a broken rib.

The Melbourne Storm back-rower has not been ruled out of the rugby league World Cup, but the injury, suffered in Storm's 40-0 grand final loss to Manly on Sunday, has cast serious doubt about his involvement in the 10-team tournament that starts on October 25.

"We initially thought it was rib cartilage damage but X-rays have revealed a cracked lower rib," Storm physiotherapist Mary Toomey said yesterday.

"You wouldn't think he would be able to do too much for a few weeks."

The Australian Rugby League's medical staff and Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart were told the extent of Crocker's injury yesterday.

It is understood the England-bound Crocker could be given more time before his injury is reassessed.

Stuart could be prepared to let Crocker, 28, miss Australia's World Cup opener against New Zealand at the Sydney Football Stadium on October 26 but select him for the clash against England at Telstra Dome on November 2.

If Crocker is ruled out of tournament, Brisbane's Sam Thaiday or Sydney Roosters hard man Nate Myles could be called into the squad.
