Kevin Rudd gives Governor-General free rein

10/10/2008 12:00:00 PM.  | AAP
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says new Governor-General Quentin Bryce is free to comment on public issues of interest, even if they are politically controversial.

Ms Bryce shouldn't be secured in some sort of ivory case precluded from making personal observations about priorities, he said.

"I mean, the previous governor-general had strong positions, for example, on the environment and would often speak on that and on indigenous policy," Mr Rudd told Fairfax.

"I am sure this current governor-general will do the same in areas of personal priority for herself."

Ms Bryce this week backed paid maternity leave, declaring support for parents was absolutely vital for strengthening families.

Australia committed to paid maternity leave when it ratified the United Nations convention against sex discrimination in 1984, she said.

The government has yet to commit itself to introducing a paid maternity leave scheme recommended by the Productivity Commission in a draft report following its public inquiry.

Just what the current economic crisis needs is to hear another female saying yeah to paid maternity leave as if another impost on employers will be good for the economy and certainly seems as though she has not been listening too much to another grandmother, a prominent one in the US (just HR leader) who over two weeks ago called it as "The Party is Over" Yes GG, Rudd, Julia, Swann and others, please take note - The Party is OVER, OVER, OVER just as it was in the roaring twenties.

Kerr did the job he was appointed to do.There has to be some balance in all of this regarding paid maternity leave-all govt workers get it as it is part of their employment conditions (they also have a choice of being paid full or half the benefit during the period allowable)-anyone employed by the govt is paid by the taxpayer so how is it that the govt doesn't provide this benefit to the private employer? Now either all workers get it get it or none! The largest employer in this country is the govt-take a look at all the so called "independent bodies" statutory bodies attached to govt depts and all paid by the Australian Taxpayer!! ICAC,HCCC,ACCC,HQuest etc(and what do they achieve except to be considered as only public money wasters). The Governor may well back the idea however she needs to look at that some (not all) female employees will claim maternity leave at one time during their employment in govt-how does that not drain on the public purse. It would also be interesting to see th

It would also be interesting to see the ratio of female employees to male employees in a govt dept and you could bet hands down that the majority would be female (BTW this is not discriminating against females being in the workplace before anyone jumps on my back). How many politicians benefit from paid maternity leave and their salaries are a lot higher than just the ordinary workers. It's also about time that govt workers were spoke with respect rather than feel they have the upper hand on everyone else and this includes the politicians put in the same category.

Rudd knows that she will not say anything against Labor-He’s probably briefed her already on what to say.
