Man shot dead by NSW police

11/10/2008 7:04:00 AM.  | AAP
Police have fatally shot a man who would not drop his knife in a caravan park in the NSW Hunter region, the NSW Police Force says.

Two police officers went to the caravan park at Belmont, at Lake Macquarie, about 5pm (AEDT) today after reports of a domestic assault.

"Police were approached by a man believed to be in his 40s who was armed with a knife," police said in a statement.

The man failed to comply with police directions to drop the knife, so police used capsicum spray on him.

"The man continued and was shot by police and subsequently died," the statement said.

The man was a mental health patient who had been on medication for schizophrenia, Channel Seven reported.

The shooting would be fully investigated by a critical incident team and a report would be prepared for the coroner, police said.

Staff at the caravan park, named in media reports as Spinnakers Leisure Park, refused to comment on the shooting tonight.

A spokeswoman for Ambulance Service of NSW said the man was confirmed dead at the scene.

"We responded to a report of a gunshot wound at 5pm (AEDT) tonight and unfortunately the person was confirmed deceased at the scene," she said.

Now this is a prime example - there is no negotiation taking place - the police seem to want to shoot first before asking any questions - this happens too often with someone who actually suffers from a mental illness - I agree the police need to do a job however when a person has a known illness there are other ways of dealing with the issue -there was no hostages except that he was holding a knife and the police were not under any threat from the information reported-isn't there any other way of stopping the person instead of fatally wounding them!I guess this is one way of dealing with the mental health issue!Again no winners here

Oh c'mon RS, they were called to a domestic dispute, like they would have all his health issues available to them ,yeah right !!They sprayed him and he kept coming, with a knife, what would you suggest they do, TALK to him...dont you think they would have been talking to him..if spray didnt stop him, how the hell are the cops supposed to know he is a mental patient. Bloody hell!! Ferry engineers get twice the money a cop does, and they dont have to be a phyciatrist and a cop..what would you do ?

Armchair critics really do amaze me. Your knowledge of the situation is limited by the sketchy information available to the media at this time. I ask you, if you were confronted by a knife wielding person who continued to come at you despite warnings & the use of capsicum spray, what would you do....HONESTLY! As for the "tasers", mate they are not available to every single police officer. GET REAL! I do live in the area so I may be priveleged to have slightly more information than you.

This man has been under the Mental Health for years. Who was monitoring him? to prevent it to get to this stage. Mick was a beautiful man who continued a life as normal as possible for years. He would do his normal routine each day. He wasn't a violent person. It is a waste of life. My sympathy goes to his family. The Police are also trained to encounter Mental Health People along with Drug induced people. Yes we have to be in the shoes of the people at the time. A shock to hear he died this way
