Ex-NSW Treasurer Michael Costa says prime minister Kevin Rudd should stop portraying himself as a dragon-slayer in the global credit squeeze and stick to funding the health system properly.

In his new column for The Australian newspaper, the feisty former cabinet member attacked Mr Rudd's attempts at Council of Australian Government meetings to connect national reform plans to the global economic crisis as "excruciating".

"Anybody with a rudimentary understanding of economics would have quickly concluded, as I did, that the prime minister didn't have a good understanding of these issues," he said.

"He ought to try to stop the acclaim game; trying to create the perception that he is providing solutions for things substantially outside his control."

Mr Costa said the prime minister should concentrate more on crucial policy areas closer to home.

"There are a lot of things, admittedly not as sexy as solving a global financial crisis, that he could legitimately work to receive acclaim for, such as solving federal-state financial agreements, particularly in the critical area of health," he said.

Of his new job as a columnist, Mr Costa said he believed he had "a useful role to play, continuing what I did in politics, which is trying to be honest with the public about the limitations of our political system."

All this dribble coming from a man that left NSW with a debt of a $1,000,000,000, yeh thats right, a debt of a billion dollars, he has a rudimentary understanding of economics .

Steve, I have some more bad news for you. The black hole is 5B? I would be veeery veeery worried mate. NSW was in a serious recession long before the US crisis, and one can only surmise how bad it will get. They have no strategic plans for anything. They are patch and mend. Crisis management people. They are peasants trying to show their intelligence. NSW is now a third world country.

perhaps for once, Costa has a valid point. Krudd "Should " butt out of things he knows nothing about and "stop" trying to claim 11 yrs of hard work by the previous govt. as his " policies showing fruition today". Just shows he's only the jockey on the Horse, not the horse thats carrying a jockey.

I find it ludicrous that this person is a disgrace and placed the whole state at risk and in the red under his management as Treasurer and he is provided with a position - if anyone else held a record like that they would be deemed unemployable - this is just a joke surely - these policiticians need a dressing down and what happens they get rewarded - how on earth can this person even think he is any better than Rudd - the problem is that Costa should also practice what he preaches and admit it!

The financial state NSW is in went WAY back before Iemma and Costa. Try Bob Carr, the great planner and non doer who buggered off to work for Macquarie Bank before the new Premier was even touted. The fact of the matter is this state has been mismanaged, rorted, stuffed, however you want to put it, for years and a lot of you boofheads out there keep voting them back in. Just on the premise they belong to the party you have always voted for. Wake up and don't make everyone suffer your stupidity.

Costa most certainly had a hand in the mess in NSW, but he is independant of party policy and factions now. Perhaps he has a point, Mr Rudd should be concentrating on keeping the COUNTRY afloat.Taking care of businees inside our borders, and forget about the UN.Those of us who have weathered many govt's, good and bad, saw this written on the wall before the crash.Unfettered credit, bloated govt bureaucracy, taxes on taxes, and media driven BS.You get the Govt you vote for, and deserve.

Agree, Carr was going to b a Messiah to everything, 1st elected he promised 2 fix health, public t'sport, education etc. If not he & deputy would resign in 6 mths. Costa wasn't in the govt then. NSW& its utilites r in strife now bcause Carr took huge dividends from vital utilities (power, water etc) an left them with no capital 2 reinvest in infrastructure.Quick fix sell profitable utilities keep unprofitable 1's! Rudd is going to fix health, t'port, education etc Dejevu, clock struck 12!

Colleen. spot-on. Proof that NSW has too many gullible voters; they believed Bob 'The Builder's ' election promises that he would fix the problems with hospitals, police, trains etc. They were never more than vote buying election promises. Costa only inherited problem areas that were already in a mess.

Costa was the best treasurer that this state has ever had. The previous federal government starved NSW of funds and Costello went as far as saying he would never give more money to a labour government. If anybody is to blame for the state of the NSW ecomnomy it Costello for choking it.

So you are suggesting that the NSW labor govt are NOT TO BLAME for the current state of affairs? You honestly believe that the Howard government gave less to NSW than to any other State? We may have had wall to wall labor State governments but NONE of the others come even close to being as completley useless as the past decade of NSW fools. If Costa was so good as treasurer then why are we in the mess we are in? Why didn't he tell us two years ago?

NSW was NEVER starved of funds .Except by the labor gov. They just didn't spend what they did get on ANY infrastructure. Where DID all that money go? Such a typical laborite" the previous government was to blame". Don't you people EVER have any other excuse to use? You're not only dumb, but boring too. Would you blame Mr Costello for not wanting to increase the funding to a mob that misused, mishandled and stuffed this state? Wake up and stop making us suffer for YOUR stupidity.

Colleen, I doubt that anyone would be able to survive the amount of suffering inflicted by your stupidity.

Given that no news is good news now days when it comes to the global economic crisis and injury is on its way i somehow hope this is time cut short so that there may be people left on the earth if so only the wise will survive and that the US will learn their leason next time and that the rest of the globe of people dont fall into the same situation and direct their lives to to life and not self distruction like sturbern US did i hope US people will survive the injury thats in its way.

Here we go again.... Costa - shut your yap. You have nothing good to show for so stop criticizing others. We're already paying for your benefits. Stop adding insult to injuries. "Anybody with common sense would have quickly concluded, as I did, that the Michael Costa didn't have a good understanding of these issues." Hey Kev, you should have new rule that when politicians do not perform well that they should not receive any benefits.
