14-year-old girl airlifted to hospital after car theft

11/10/2008 5:03:00 PM.  | AAP

A 14-year-old girl has been airlifted to hospital with multiple injuries after crashing a stolen car on the F3 freeway north of Sydney.

The underage driver is in a stable condition at the Children's Hospital at Westmead where she is being treated for neck, shoulder and facial injuries after the Ford Fiesta she was driving slammed into a rock wall on the F3, near the Calga interchange at 9.30am (AEDT) today.

The crash caused the car to flip onto its roof before sliding back into the southbound lanes and colliding with a Holden Commodore.

The driver of the second car, a 43-year-old Somersby man, was not injured.

The Ford Fiesta driven by the young teenager was reported as having been stolen from Newcastle John Hunter Hospital about 90 minutes before the crash, police said.

Witnesses told police the car was travelling at speeds of up to 150km/h before it struck the rock face.

Police say the girl is expected to be charged with multiple offences when released from hospital.

Southbound lanes were temporarily blocked as a rescue helicopter landed at the scene, with traffic diverted onto the Old Pacific Highway.
