Roozendaal sharpens razor but won't commit to cuts

12/10/2008 12:59:00 PM.  | Erin Maher and Richard Maxton
Under-performing public servants have been told - they could face the sack, but the treasurer is still refusing to guarantee the excess baggage will finally be cut loose.

Treasurer Eric Roozendaal has formed a razor gang to slash spending across all departments to figure out how to fill the Rees Government's billion dollar budget blackhole.

Mr Roozendaal says, with the state in danger of losing its Triple-A credit rating, it's time to trim the fat.

"Clearly, if we find bureaucrats that are not making a contribution and are not representing value to the people of NSW we'll look seriously at removing them."

That could even include getting rid of hired pot plants and paintings but Roozendaal says he isn't willing to commit to targeting the displaced list.

"I'm not going to drill down and be specific but we'll certainly be looking at all aspects of where we can find savings."

The Labor Party are feeling the heat already form next weekend bi-elections and have resorted to using opposition policy prior to the last elections to deflect voter anger. Treasurer Eric Roozendaal has ordered that hired paintings and pot plants are banned, under-performing bureaucrats be sacks, and those on the 'unattached List ' find another position within 6 months. Mr. Roozendaal needs first to explain what has changed since the last election to justify this change of heart. And why has he got it so right and the opposition had it so wrong prior to the last NSW state elections. The plan was rubbished by both his party and the union movement who ran ads based on lies in order to win the state elections. Eric Roozendaal has just proved the opposition had it right and had democracy been allowed to run its full course without them intervening NSW would have been in a much better position today. If the treasurer thinks voters will make the same mistake again he will be sadly mista

I hope he means politicians in that batch and also the many statutory so called independent bodies attached to these govt depts - what a waste of public funds they all are - none of which do their job eg. the HCCC is a prime example of incompetence!

I see now it is a 1B black hole, last week it was less, where are they hiding the other 4B that they have fessed up to at this time as the black hole is 5B. NSW is in recession and now a third world state. Nothing works, and yet the people have voted for the biggest bunch of fools in the country. Now you will pay the highest price of all.

How many managers and CEO's and supervisors does each department really need. how much staff does each pollie really need? why cant they all drive themselves to work? or use public transport, i hear its reliable from the government. if we have to tighten our belts so should they. it should start at the bloody top.

The best way to trim fat would be to cut the head off the monster. That means you Roozendaal and the rest of the incompetent labor mates that have put NSW in this position. Sack yourself and at least then you can say you did the right thing by the state and its people.

WE NEED JEFF KENNETT!!! - we are in the same shape as Victoria was under that incompetant Joan Kirner - and we need a strong person who can and will make the hard call - Victoria is still progressing as a result of what Kennett was able to achieve!!
