Delays could have cost Britt her life, claims travelling buddy

13/10/2008 5:05:00 PM.  | AAP
Delays in responding to the disappearance of Britt Lapthorne in Croatia could have cost her her life, a travelling friend says, and believes an inquiry is warranted.

Tara Reynolds said it took the Australian government five days to tell the Lapthorne family that Croatian authorities had reported her missing.

"It's those kind of actions early on that could have cost this girl's life," she told ABC Radio today from London.

"It warrants a big inquiry. I don't know how that will all pan out in the future. But it's disgusting. Who knows if anything was taken up earlier we could have had a different outcome."

Ms Reynolds, who travelled with Ms Lapthorne in Europe, also said she did not understand why police had not revealed what she was wearing at the time of her disappearance.

This follows reports of the discovery of Slovenia-labelled shorts on the side of a secluded road.

"I don't know why the police haven't announced what she was wearing so they must be still looking. I hope they are. And I can't trust them so I don't know," she said.

"I just wasn't 100 per cent sure that they were doing everything they could."

Ms Lapthorne was last seen at a Dubrovnik nightclub in the early hours of September 18.

DNA last week identified a body found floating off the city was Ms Lapthorne.

Detectives in Dubrovnik reportedly have interviewed 340 witnesses from the nightclub, among them some who saw Ms Lapthorne leave at 3.30am on the morning of September 18.

One of the witnesses was a Croatian girl who saw Ms Lapthorne laughing and dancing with an English-speaking man for most of the evening and right up to the time she departed, ABC reported.

Police also want to talk to another three travellers.

enough already, she most likely died the night she went out so there was nothing the govt could've done...sick to death of hearing about Britt Lapthorne, like she's the only person to ever go missing or die overseas.

Watch out M Smith... you might be accused of being heartless like I was on another article. I'm sick of media assuming they know everything & more about situations like this, of them involving themselves above and beyond what's appropriate and SICK of them playing judge, jury and executioner on current events! It's sickening -not as sickening as what might have happened to Britt- but enough to frustrate this tired reader. Clean up your act media, or you'll find yourself without stories to tell.

oh good onya M.Smith- if it was your child I doubt you'd be saying things like that. It turns out that something good could come out of this horrible event- more awareness of Aussies missing OS. Could be YOUR child one day- (I hope not). How about thinking first before opening that stupid mouth of yours.

Z Alex, if you cared to understand the context of the comments being made instead of just assuming we're heartless and don't care about what's happened - you might agree with what's being said. The issue isn't about poor Britt- my & everyone's heart goes out to her! The issue is the media using it all as an excuse to bash any authority involved from pillar to post, simply for a headline - not to mention milking the parents of Britt for all it's worth. It's about what sells papers, nothing else.

Police in some states of Australia can impound cars of road hoons and it certainly seems as though some law ought to be introduced for irresponsible journalism attempting to get blood out of a stone in deciding that Ms Reynolds is well qualified to report on policing matters and by this report it seems as some acknowledgement is also given to Ms Reynolds having inside information re when Australian authorities were advised etc.

Damned if you do, Dmaned if you dont. % days w2as probably considerwed to be a responsible time frame for her to show up? Govt. would be lambasted for jumping the gun, labasted for not. Why is people expect croatia to have the same policing standard/methods/resources at their disposal as we have? Shocking events yes however people aught get off their high horses about what was and wasnt done correctly. Protocol is founded on the back of errors, I feel for the officers denegrated by the "circus".

Now lets get some fairness here - who picked her destinations ? who controls the laws of the countries of those destinations ? who should take responsibility for those choices ? get a grip -m we all make OUR OWN choices - stop trying to put the blame elsewhere !!!

yeah... I bet you'd never be found dead outside of Gladstone.... born there, die there.... like your father did, and your father's father... those p&^ks down the road in Brisbane are a bunch of city-slickers, let alone CROATIA.... that's like an entirely new planet!!!

Denigration of the Foreign Affairs Minister Smith is justified. If the fish stinks from the head down, then so be it. This poor woman was brutally murdered and decapitated by some sick perverted person in Croatia. What did the Federal Government do about it and when. There should be a full blown enquiry into the Foreign Affairs Minister Smith actions what action he took action and his people. No person in their right mind would go to Croatia now.

I find it very distasteful for the media to be playing on the grief of this family.Reporting on a Father who is obviously so devastated at the loss of his daughter, of course he is asking why ??? Until all the law processes are finalised, I believe the media should cease making this a rather ghoulish spectacle.Britts Father is lashing out at anyone who will listen right now, he is in pain and struggling to accept the death of his child.Surely a man's personal battle with grief, is private.Enough

All the way along this looks like everybody official would just prefer it all to go away. Dare i suggest that the only thing bringing all of this out into the open and putting pressure on Governments and police to act has been the pressure applied by the press. What concerns me is that when the body arrives back it will all quieten down and whomever has done this will slink further into the shadows.

GG perhaps the the media will stop reporting when the imbecile lets them get some sleep .Lapthorne should stop knocking on the journos doors and give them back their microphones.Trust you to be in the Lapthorne corner.I have had a gutfull of him.

Some real enlightenment by the latecomers there like Andy knowing Britt was murdered with decapitation, Alan reckons the press are tops and Lance!, well Lance has said more than he should have, and we have not even seen the autopsy report, so maybe Britt did fall into the sea hitting her head on rocks on the way down and if not dead drowned, and then don't bodies initially sink before rising and coulld the reported limb damage been from a ships propellor?

I believe the arm chair critics and journalists are taking advantage of a man who is obviously griefstricken.Lance only ever has an issue with what I post, GG is his term of reference for me...Strange I dont see many jumping on him for his lack of empathy.Trust you to insinuate their are "corners" to be taken even in a tradgedy Lance. Trust you to call a grieving father an "imbecile" Lance. Trust you to pick only my comment Lance ! Again, grow up, I dont take "sides" in anothers loss.

To all the CSI freaks - keep going you might get your own show yet - the media bashing authorities? you have got to be kidding Tim Costello (gee I hope you are not another impersonator because if you are you are definitely breaking the Terms and Conditions). I don't see the media giving the politicians on the left are hard kick up the rear - I wonder why Tim surely it can't be because they only can report subjectively and not objectively - a dying art unfortunately but that's reality for you!

RS - the media give every politician a serve and quite frankly I'm sick of it. Part of the reason things never get done is because the media continually earbash the politicians, forcing them into PR event after PR event to placate the masses which only ends up delivering more spin. Media backs off = more gets done. And who the hell am I impersonating? Violating Terms & Conditions? How in God's name am I doing that?

Results of Croatian Autopsy on Britt indicate that decomposition had been so great so as not to be able to draw any conclusion, and according to an internet report the Victorian Coroner is ready with their CSI team.

To M Smith.....your comment disgusted me...you are heartless in every sense of the word. I agree with the Z Alex from Geelong, if it was one of your loved ones, how would you feel? Maybe you should re-phrase your comments before you spit them out...it's one thing to refer to the media, another to mention the name of someone who i believe was brutally murdered, and nothing else!!!! Have a bit of sympathy and respect for family and friends reading this......

oh the media this, the media that. if you dont like it dont read it, watch it or listen to it. its their job and they get it done. They throw all the facts out there to try and make a difference. And what are you lot doing? Instead of sitting on your ass reading things you dont like and making heartless comments why dont you read up on some of the differences the media has made in the past. i.e watergate, the amber alert, veronica guerin (its not just a movie mate) etc

Grow Up M Smith, Tim . The Croatian Authorities have been incompetently slow with details and thier coroners report is bullsh*t. The father is hurting over his daughter being killed and If this was someone you loved you would want answers and not for the truth to be swept under the rug. Its easy for someone to post macho bullsh*t on blogs as it hasnt happened to you yet. im glad the media is houdning the government and authorities, they need to pull their thumb out of thier ass and do something.

It’s the ultimate irony – on the same night the Labor party was voting to stop pub punch-ups, Nationals MP Andrew Fraser was shoving a female colleague on the floor of parliament, fresh from Christmas drinks.
