Pension relief at last? Rudd hints surplus may be spent

13/10/2008 2:27:00 PM.  | Rachael Stevens
An increase in the aged pension could be on the agenda, after the government declared it would spend some of the budget surplus to boost economic growth.

The federal opposition is calling for a 30 dollar a week increase in the single aged pension, claiming it would help stimulate the economy.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says the government will begin dipping into the $22 billion budget surplus, but won’t say who will benefit from the spending.

“The government is resolved, as we’ve indicated before, to take decisive action as is necessary to support economic growth into the future,” he said.

“The government is considering practical measures to that effect as we speak and we’ll make further statements as is necessary.”

I'm going to have some eggs, after reading this excellent article. Super is very important to me, and I intend to contribute more as the market is very cheap
