Pomersbach and Marsh power WA to victory

13/10/2008 6:44:00 PM.  | AAP
Luke Pomersbach and Shaun Marsh have combined for a whirlwind 112-run partnership to lift Western Australia to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over NSW in the Sheffield Shield clash at the WACA Ground.

Set 223 runs for victory, Warriors openers Liam Davis (41) and Marsh (74 not out) took the score to 78 before Pomersbach (78 off 74 deliveries) entered the fray in a brutal frame of mind.

The explosive left-hander smashed nine fours and four sixes as he combined with Marsh to take the game away from the visitors, who simply had no answers to the Warriors' powerful top-order.

Pomersbach holed out in the deep shortly after lunch on day four but the damage had already been done, with Marsh and skipper Marcus North (16 not out) sealing the win 33 minutes after the interval.

Warriors paceman Steve Magoffin was named man of the match after snaring match figures of 10-102.

The 28-year-old was the key to Western Australia's success, his probing line and length consistency building the pressure on an inexperienced Blues line-up.

Blues spinner Beau Casson endured a nightmare return to Perth at the worst possible time.

The 25-year-old, who was keen to show national selectors his worth after his surprise omission from Australia's Test tour of India, suffered a minor knee twinge early in the contest and bowled just six overs for the match, returning match figures of 0-17.

He also failed to have an impact with the bat, recording a duck and two.

The Warriors snared first-innings points after posting 265 in reply to NSW's first dig of 177 but the Blues hit back on day three, setting the home side a challenging victory total of 223 after Dominic Thornely's 97 guided the visitors to 310.

WA started day four at 0-52 and the Blues sensed a slight opening when Davis was trapped lbw by Grant Lambert.

But any chance of NSW making significant inroads was brutally dashed by Pomersbach, who smashed some massive sixes as the Blues' bowling attack wilted.

It was an impressive turnaround from the Warriors, who suffered a shock six-run Ford Ranger Cup loss to the Blues last week.
