Rudd needs to meet with me: Turnbull

13/10/2008 9:29:00 AM.  | AAP
Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull has made a fresh appeal to the government to sit down with him and talk through the global financial crisis.

Mr Turnbull says he had been asking Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for a meeting for the last three weeks, to no avail.

The opposition was ready to focus on the national interest and put party politics second, but only if a meeting with the government could be arranged, he said.

"The only note of disappointment that I want to express is Mr Rudd's failure to engage in a bipartisan, constructive discussion with us," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Canberra.

Mr Turnbull reiterated his comments, made yesterday, that he supported the government's pledge to guarantee bank deposits and support the banking system.

The opposition will support enabling legislation through the parliament.

Mr Turnbull said he was looking forward to a briefing from Treasury on the measures later today.

Good that Turnbull is keeping the pressure on Rudd. Australia needs this assertiveness at a time like this, and Turnbull IS the man to do it. But Rudd won't accept the offer....because Rudd knows best!

Maybe Rudd is scared that Malcolm knows best. Mrs Rudd is the one who handles money in that household so we are often told.

Turnbull would do better to curb his ego. Instead of the government sitting down with him. he may achieve more if he asked to sit down with the government. He still sounds like the arrogant man who said that it was all his doing that the banks dropped their interest rates; he still reminds me of the rooster who believes the sun only rises because he crows each morning. M. Moore, please don't hide behind semantics. That is a Ruddism. Whether its come over to my place or go over to yours, its irrelevant. Turnbull is offering and Rudd will find any/all reasons to refuse.

Well! After all Turnbull was successful in the banking business. In addition doesn't Turnbull have some influence on passing Government Bills in the Senate?

Good on you Malcolm-you have offered the olive branch in trying to help avoid a possible National crisis. It is up to the people of Australia now to form a judgement about Rudd as to how we get through this threat.

Malcolm accuses Rudd of flying off on some crazy adventure overseas, labels him Kevin747, says he should remain in Aus during these tumultuous times, and upon his return pesters him to reveal everything he has learnt from his counterparts? Pl-ease. Maybe Turnbull should be sending his own shadow ministers out and learn exactly how to do it for themselves, rather than be hipocritical all the time.

Rudd and Swann are attempting to educate themselves by nibbling on the crumbs from international government meetings and the greater stance on savings guarantee is in the direction of what Turnbull had already stated, and so mm what is it in "Mr Turnbull says he had been asking Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for a meeting for the last three weeks, to no avail." that you cannot see an ask? and hopefully some sense may also prevail on Wong's ETS agenda.

Well done Malcom its about time we had someone in Parliment who demanded answers and keep the gov of the day accountable, the last thing we need is a Federal Labour Gov, working like ,NSW State Labour, they already look like there married to each other.

From NYTimes on Putin and Russian economic collapse "Even as Russia has experienced strong growth in recent years, driven by oil and gas revenue, it has not achieved gains in diversifying its economy. Nor has it had significant success in modernizing decrepit roadways, power grids and housing." Which country does this, broadly speaking, remind you of, people? Hint- one which has recently voted out a discredited, lazy government or for the deniers, a country with the domain suffix au.

I didn't think we had voted out the discredited lazy NSW/QLD/VIC/SA governments yet??? They were given a huge funding boost called the GST and did nothing with it, except bloat the public sector payroll and pay off their currupt cronies with the mony.

One good reason we should get rid of the states, so you and your "friends" on here no longer have a scape goat when people point out the glaring and obvious failings of your political heroes. But getting rid of the states will not be enough, you would just blame local councils then wouldn't you.

Russel Jones: Your assumptions as to who are my friends and political heroes betrays your thin skin when it comes to criticism towards failed Labor state governments, who I believe to be the ones who have let the side down when it comes to infrastructure and dishonest cronyism.

Russell Jones-John Howard and the Coalition did a fantastic job for the Nation-a lot better than your failed heroes Whitlam, Hawke and Keating-they did a fantastic job of ruining the economy. Rudd is no better-he was handed a magnificent economy with a massive surplus (unlike what Hawke and Keating left for the Coalition). Rudd’s plan for infrastructure depends on future surpluses-he is not going to get it-Labor cannot manage the economy because they have to obey their Union masters and other left wing sympathisers. We may as well abolish the States because Rudd is going to pay for their mismanagement anyway-if he has the money.

Christopher Weafer, chief strategist at Uralsib Bank in Moscow on Russia “Over the last eight years, they have gotten $1.3 trillion in oil and gas revenues, but that money has not been used to bring up the country’s infrastructure. This is a big problem for the market.” Sounds familiar does it not? Like he could be speaking about a continent in the southern hemisphere. (not Africa of South America domain suffix au.)

Malcontent Spinbulldung is just the latest temporary leader of the Libs, he really needs to realise that the Libs were given the boot because their policies stink and who really cares what the chief bozzo says, after all look at the advice he gave in the HIH disaster. The further this Temporary King of the Greedisgoodites is kept from the action the better.

Henderson/Freestone - haven't noticed that Rudd is shadowing Turnbull very closely of late...RMBS (after panning Turnbull's gaffe!)....guaranteeing bank deposits beyond Rudd's $20K...pensioners next. Rudd's got it right now....follow the opposition! I'm feeling more confident now.

Someone needs to explain to Turnbull who the Govt is .You could just see Howard inviting Beasley or Latham in for a bi-partisan chat. The lunatic Liberals on this site have a long time to wait before anyone chats to their ilk.

Lance Freestone-John Howard didn't need to invite Beasley or Latham because he had every thing under control-every economic statistic will attest to that. Rudd on the other hand is Rudderless and he will not get any worthwhile assistance from the likes of Swan, Tanner and that left wing ideologue Julia Gillard. I don’t think that the Liberals will have to wait beyond the next election for a return to power-by then a large proportion of 'working families' will become 'jobless families' and they will be yearning for the comfort and security of the John Howard years.

Mr Turnbull may I advise you that Mr Rudd PM of Australia can manage with out you as he is proving day by day; tea and scones are not on the agenda.

Deluded Maybury, haven't you noticed that Rudd is shadowing Turnbull very closely of late...RMBS (after panning Turnbull's gaffe!)....guaranteeing bank deposits beyond Rudd's $20K...pensioners next. Rudd's got it right now....follow the opposition! I'm feeling far more confident now. Turnbull really has Rudd on the run.

Weeks ago I said Geoff could simply cut an paste his drivel, so monotonous and feeble are his opinions. And now we see Boltsen doing just that.

Opinionless Darrow, same left wing drivel from Maybury deserves and gets the same reply! Makes sense to me. Do you have a problem with that? Are you moderating the site nowdays? Get a life.

Carrow, nothing wrong with copy and paste as long as it's original. Also the reason copy and paste works is because labor supporters tend to feed the public the same crap each and every time.
