Australia's push for victory was frustrated as Indian Sachin Tendulkar closed on the title of Test cricket's greatest runmaker at tea on the final day of the first Test in Bangalore.
Beginning the innings needing 64 to surpass Brian Lara's total of 11,953, Tendulkar moved to 47 by tea, just 17 runs short.
India were 3-130 at the final break, needing a further 169 runs from a minimum of 35 overs for an unlikely victory.
Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark each have a wicket apiece.
