O'Grady slams Kohl's positive dope test

14/10/2008 9:35:00 PM.  |
Top Australian cyclist Stuart O'Grady is feeling a mix of deep disappointment and some optimism as the sport deals with its latest doping scandal.

Austrian Bernhard Kohl, third at this year's Tour de France, is the fourth rider from the race to be found positive for the third-generation drug EPO Cera.

France's national anti-doping agency (AFLD) has pioneered a new blood test for CERA since the Tour.

The AFLD is currently retroactively testing blood samples of riders taken during the 2008 race

"In one way, it's great to know these guys are being caught with stuff that I'd never even heard of a few months ago," O'Grady said.

"I think I'm over the shock point of view, it's just really disappointing."

O'Grady's CSC-Saxo Bank teammate Carlos Sastre won the Tour this year.

CSC have their own anti-doping program.

The Australian, who had an outstanding race in support of Sastre, wonders whether cyclists who continued to take banned substances know the damage they are causing.

"It's just really disappointing - I can't understand these guys' mentalities," O'Grady said.

"It's not only that they're ready to put their own careers on the line, but (those) of 30 other riders in the team.

"I don't think they realise the damage it does and the impact it has on the sport.

"German cycling is going through a very difficult time, ProTour are really out there trying to find sponsors and you have these guys that continually tarnish the sport."
