Rudd should come clean on reasons for stimulus: Bishop

16/10/2008 7:24:00 AM.  | Gillian Cannon & AAP
The Prime Minister is under increasing pressure to release what advice the $10.4 billion financial package is based on.

On Tuesday the opposition declared bipartisan support for the package, aimed at protecting the economy from the global financial crisis, but are now attacking it.

Opposition Treasury spokeswoman Julie Bishop's told ABC television, the Australian people have a right to know why the government's taking such dramatic action.

“We would have expected the government to tell the Australian people, through the parliament, that growth is expected to slow to a particular per cent.

“Now, it took us three questions to get the Prime Minister to say ‘there will be a two in front of it’.”

She says it's the opposition's role to hold the government to account, but says it seems outraged they would dare question the evidence upon which this package is based.

Ms Bishop was referring to a fiery question time in parliament yesterday, when the opposition tried to ascertain what economic advice the government had received on the economy.

The Opposition have given their support. The Government cannot complain if the Opposition want to scrutinise the data that drove the decision. It is the job of the opposition to hold the government to account. The crap we heard from "spoilt brat" Rudd yesterday about the opposition changing their minds was absolute rubbish. The opposition is justifiably questioning the government. Grow up Kevvie.

Who is going to listen to this Bishop Bag from the west, she would be better of working in a wig department. Prime Minister Rudd wins hands down so go away, Bishop take a lead from our Deputy Prime Minister the Hon Julie Gillard and what a star she is.

g maybury-Julia Gillard is nothing but a left wing ideologue having a free run at the moment-she won’t be there for long because she is helping Rudd to beat Hawke and Keating in bringing about a recession in the quickest time possible. As far as looks is concerned. You call Julie Bishop a bag-tell you what Gillard should wear a mask every time she goes out-UGH!!!

Christmas has come early to pensioners, and mums and dads with this one off payment that the Rudd government has handed out,but at what expense to Australia.Surely a general rise in pensions would have been far better and not so drastic to the government surplus.I am sure the Liberal opposition party would have chosen a different avenue to go down if they had been in power, but of course they had to side with Rudd,if not the back lash they would have received would have been massive.

"sure the Liberal party would have chosen a different avenue to go down if they had been in power" You are joking aren't you? Libs gave Harvey Norman the 5K baby(plasma) bonus, $800 pre-election bonus(vote bribe) per child in 04 and 07. Also, pensioners received lump sum bonuses before, from Howard. Rudd giving money away like this is more responsible in a downturn than Howard giving money away in overheated economy, which only fuels inflation etc. Rudd=responsible. Turnball etc=unfunny joke

it was probably my fault...I kept saying Krudd did nothing but make useless websites. But jeez Krudd, why try and stimulate an over cocked housing market??? If I can buy a nicer apartment in Sloane Square (London), Manhattan (NY) and Ginza (Tokyo) for less than a place in Potts Point something is WAY WRONG. The crash is just going to burn more! Our housing needs to deflate by 33%. He could have reduced council rates on New Housing and achieved a better outcome.

I have heard Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd say the words 'Evidence Based Policy' almost as many times as they have said 'Australian Working Families". The Australian public has a right to see the evidence they have used in order to justify this enormous one off gift to their traditional constituents. The opposition are simply doing their job in demanding to see the advice. Destroying the surplus in this way will have long term effects, that we will all regret, especially working families.

Rudd claims they are racing ahead of the game but he keeps looking back over his shoulder, initially Australia having been quite OK he said, our banks strong, so strong in fact they showed the public this strength by deciding with another neck twist to guarantee deposits, and so with all this sprinting ahead whilst looking backwards it is good that someone is at least asking what road map they are using, and even then their ability to read a compass is likely to have us over a cliff.

Bishop and Turnbull need to get their act together.First they say Rudd needs to stimulate the Economy by using the Surplus,So Rudd does,Then they say they support it,Then they say they don't and want to know the reasons why? Well it could be that Economies are slowing all over the world,Countries are slipping into recession,Retailers are hurting with slipping sales,a large % of Australians are struggling to make ends meet and the list goes on .Bishop is a Novice and it shows where is Costello ?

Dapto, theny didn't say that they didn't support it. That was verballing by Gillard & Rudd. They support it and now deserve to see the facts behind it. Nothing wrong with that unless Rudd is hiding something. This slowing was happening late last year. Costello warned, nobody listened. Rudd stopped the economy too soon. Now he's in trouble - WHICH IS WHY RUDD WON'T RELEASE THE DETAIL!

Bolts: Hindsight is a wonderful ability and Turnbull has an abundance of it! "If i can turn back time" must be his favourite song.Whats Rudd got to hide? We couldn't have stopped USA crisis which has flowed onto the rest of the World. What goes up must come down always happens and always will do.Markets will sort themselves out."Don't Worry Be Happy" Rudd will steer us through to good times again.Bishop won't last SHE is a Lame Duck and Swan will have Roast Duck soon.

Dapto, don't hide behind the GFC because that's what Rudd's doing. Costello had foresight - go to his interviews BEFORE the election. It will be shown (over time) that Rudd ignored advice to act earlier, because he couldn't get off his "inflation genie" bandwagon - THAT'S WHY HE WON'T RELEASE ANY DETAIL. Watch question time today...it will be interesting, as long as Rudd actually answers a question!

G. Maybury, did you take a double dose of nasty pills to-day ?? Since when have good looks been a requisite for being a Member of Parliament?? Obviously that doesn't apply to Government members. Get a life and look at what these people do and not what they look like. You are a nasty little man (I presume you are a man !). At least Julie Bishop does not have to resort to snide, vitriolic remarks with a continual smirk on her face to get her point across. Are you obsessed with wigs ???

This is Australian partisan politics at it's best. The opposition supports the $10.4b package but want to see the evidence in the treasury advice. The Government keeps skewing the debate and steadfastly refusing to reveal the evidence because, as everybody knows, the treasury advice is dated some 8 MONTHS AGO. They fear the Treasury advice would condemn their "tame pet" RBA governor and their recent "anti-inflation" sham.

Narchy. Correct. Rudd & Gillard are very good (particularly at question time) of "verballing" the opposition. The term "verballing" is a polite way of saying "telling lies". Over time, Rudd and his cohorts will get exposed as the incomptents they are. Rudd (in parliament) ridicules the opposition for "not supporting" policy for which Rudd is unwilling to give any detail. Rudd has done this since day 1. Rudd wants unquestioned support for his ETS BEFORE the full financial analysis is available.

Oh, Malcontent Spinbull is going to be angry, HE is the spokeslady on these matters. Actually I am impressed that this thing can still speak, I was expecting a funeral notice it's been that quiet. Of course we see the COALition is still trying to politicize this issue. I certainly would never trust them. And Runawaycrybaby Costello, Mr higher interest rates policy is now saying lowering interest rates is the answer. So what was he doing for twelve years?

Gra, Gra, gah gah, as much as politicians like to crow over interest rates coming down and rises being needed as determined by the Reserve Bank, lets remember that it is the Reserve Bank board that makes the decision and so back to the matter at hand, the Opposition at least have the capacity to realise that some quick footwork was in order and thus would not disagree in the first instance on stimulus, but also as an opposition they have every right to see that the decision was a responsible one
