Is this possum the first furry victim of climate change?

3/12/2008 9:38:00 AM.  | AAP
Where is the white lemuroid possum?

Scientists in far north Queensland suspect the missing creature may be the first extinction of a mammal caused by climate change.

The possum, whose only habitat is above 1000 metres in the moutain rainforests around Daintree, north of Cairns, has not been seen for three years.

Experts fear a temperature rise of up to 0.8C could be responsible.

It would be the first known loss of a mammal and the most significant since the extinction of the Dodo and the Tasmanian Tiger.

"It is not looking good," researcher Steve Williams told The Courier Mail.

"Prior to 2005 we were seeing a lemuroid every 45 minutes of spotlighting at one main site at Mt Lewis," he said.

"If they have died out it would be first example of something that has gone extinct purely because of global warming."

Professor Williams, director of the Centre for Tropical Biodiversity and Climate Change at James Cook University, said it only takes four or five hours of temperatures above 30C to kill the highly vulnerable species.

He said record high temperatures in the summer of 2005 could have caused a massive die-off.

An expedition will be mounted next year in an attempt to locate survivors.

This man is OFF his freakin Nut! I grew up in that area and can tell you now that 30+ temps are the norm for ANY summer up there. Before anyone wants to rant about Temp change at hieght and in the " Forest", Again, It's where i grew up. 32 is the general av. temp. I think the proff. needs to calm down and look for the REAL reason why they're going. Proff. should do some research in the Temp ranges up there before sprouting sillys like this PHURPHY. !

Hey Nick Again, the possum is from high-altitude regions of Queensland, where the climate is cooler than the rest of the state. From the Atherton Tableland Tourism website, "Atherton Tablelands/Cairns Highlands (has) a temperature which rarely exceeds 30 degrees C." So YOU need to do your research, Einstein. However, I doubt climate change is the culprit -- deforestation, and dogs and cats (both domestic and feral) are to blame.

Rick, are you saying then that because the " tourism info site " says " rarely, then it doesn't happen? I suppose your never guilty of questioning the Temp given for your town on the news, when you KNOW it was hotter than shown? The beautiful little box that holds the weather instruments must be right eh? Like i said, i grew up in the region, I know it gets hotter than 30 often. Perhaps living in Melbourne has taken your ability to think for yourself. Hunting for the pelt would be MY guess!

Rick, it's simple. I grew up there. My family are from there. I dont need to read some piece of ADVERTISING crap to see what the temps. are. A lot of the people I know still live there and still reckon this piece of news is crap as the Temp is OFTEN over 30.Try getting out of Crap land, go and spen a couple of Yrs up there, then tell me what the weather is like. You gotta love Idiots who tghink they got it going on, because they read it in a book. get a life fool( sorry, forgot.you live in MElB)

And the Tasmanian Tiger was also a global warming victim. Of course the first extinction of the dodo was for the same reason. Don't forget the dinosaurs. If the neandertals had not discovered fire and caused global warming, they would still be here (or are they really here and running the government - state and federal)

It looks to me like the professor is looking for some extra funding so the best way to get it these days seems to be to attach the words Global Warming or Climate Change to everything. I would suggest doing thorough, unbiased research instead of just dragging out the fictional global warming/climate change rubbish.

Blaming climate change is a way of distancing us humans from the cause! We are world class exterminators of wildlife. Our human population is still growing and damage to land, loss of habitat, habitat destruction are all linked to climate change.

More species have lived and become extinct than the total of all species that exist today. The climate is not and never has been static so we should not be surpised that this will continue to happen. If however, people are going to use stories like this to support emissions trading schemes etc.. in some futile attempt to control climate then this is plain ridiculous.

The Climate Change Septics are getting touchy these days. And some are happy to be positively rude. There has been a lowering of standards on this site of late, seeing an imbecile and coward like Repeat Offender slagging off someone infinitely more intelligent than it is not surprising, but it is disappointing. The racist right and the GREEDISGOODITES are starting to panic as indicated by their increasingly abusive posts.

It wasn't global warming that did it. The evidence of local temperature measurements illustrates well that the area has cooled slightly. Maybe the journalists means to blame President Bush ?

LMAO,I heard someone saw a Yetti near Tamworth the other day.He was pure white too .Think it was from being sumerged for awhile in the floods...yep I know, its all because of CLIMATE CHANGE,(the excuse you have for taxation when youve got nothing else and you think you have fooled the public).GET REAL LiveNews and stop publishing this rot.

If the possum is extinct it's probably because the scientists kept going up the mountain and STRESSED the possums out to the max. or because someone likes eating possum. Leave them alone for Petes sake.

Hear that, a little FROG from the Conondale area was last seen years ago. Sadly the last reported sighting was taken to a LAB so they could cut it up to determine it's sex. Typical of the IDIOCY of the so called " Scientist" and their creed.

Is the good professor telling us there has never been a heat wave (or temps reaching 30 for 5/6 hours) in far north Qld in the past few hundred years?

These smart little creatures have probably moved out because of the infestation or feral humans who are trying to convince the rest of us of a problem that has yet to be proved, scientifically. Climate has ALWAYS changed and always will. It's not and never has been a static science. So if the dopes go back to their caves MAYBE the furry little creatures will come back. I hope so, I'd rather live with them than the gloom and doom brigade.

Reminds me of a great line in the documentary 'Great Globing Warming Swindle" which went something like this........."If I wanted to determine the acorn collecting habbits of squirrels in Surrey, I would put in my proposal that it was with special reference to the effects of global warming in order to try and get my funding....." Seems like the good professor has watched that documentary........

As I speak my two budgies,Bluey and Curley, are flying over the region with video cameras on their heads. They will bring us a birds eye view of what is happening to these possums. Bluey thinks its aliens, but stand by....
