MP slammed for selling photos of petrol doused protester

3/12/2008 8:11:00 PM.  | AAP

A Labor MP has apologised for taking a photograph of a protester who threatened to set himself alight outside federal parliament and giving it to the media.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Harry Jenkins, said the incident was a reminder the lower house may want to consider a code of conduct.

The photo is of Marat Aminov, 28, who had doused himself in petrol and threatened to set himself alight.

Earlier this week he jumped onto the floor of parliament and was led away by guards.

Labor MP for Dawson, north Queensland, James Bidgood, who appeared upset, admitted taking the photographs and passing them onto News Limited.

He said he handed over the photos in exchange for a donation to charity connected to disabilities.

"My actions were highly insensitive and inappropriate and I am tonight writing a letter of apology to the family involved," Mr Bidgood told parliament on Wednesday.

"I deeply regret my actions and I apologise once again for any offence I have caused."

Manager of opposition business, Joe Hockey, asked Mr Jenkins to urgently investigate the "repugnant" incident.

"This incredibly disturbing image provided by the member of parliament to the media outlet raises a number of very alarming issues," he said.

"I ask you to advise the house whether there have been any breaches of security by the Member for Dawson, whether he has abused the entitlements of his office as a member of parliament or if there is any other conduct totally unbecoming of a member of this parliament in relation to this tasteless matter," he said.

Mr Jenkins said he would take some time to consider whether or not he had the power to investigate the incident and would report back to the lower house.

I can understand this guys frustrations but does he seriously think that things will be eaisier for him and his parents if he keeps performing nutter stunts. I dont think that we need his type in this country. There is a process to go through and he needs to be patient and work with the process rather than performing attention seeking stunts. You didnt see that Victorian based German Doctor and his family doing stpid attention seeking stunts to gain visas.

Excitable chap. Migrants tend to have a rather forthright and unpleasant way of demonstrating their disagreement with decisions made by officials. Why can't he just complain to Alan Jones like everyone else?

"Migrants tend to have a rather forthright and unpleasant way of demonstrating their disagreement with decisions made by officials." @Paul Neri: You sir, are an ignorant prick. @Denlo: You sir, are an uncompassionate prick. It's been shown time and time again that humans from anywhere will react poorly when under conditions of uncertainty. It's surprising this doesn't happen more. Clever? No. Understandable? Depends how much you get out, I s'pose.

Leon I guess we all knew that a few card carrying bleeding heart do-gooders like you and Hendo would pop up. You are the sort who think we should throw open the gates to anyone who wants to come here. Did you notice that we are running out of WATER here. We have to have strict limits & standards for immigrants. We don't have to be held to ransom by those who don't qualify & we don't need do-gooders rallying to their demands. If he doesn't like our rules & way if life he has the right to leave.

Deport this man as soon as he recovers. He is NOT an Australian citizen. One strike you are out. This is already his second. You think I am being tough? Well, tough.

Mr Aminov's body on the ground is the sort of image that we see here on City streets of Melbourne people homeless begging for food and a place to sleep.

I think it's tragic that this man feels that he needs to go to such lengths to be heard - and who can blame him after 11 years of waiting in limbo? Perhaps those who think he should not be allowed to become an Australian citizen should consider themselves lucky that they have always had somewhere they can call home.

How do you know he has been waiting 11 years or is that just another lie to discredit Howard? Maybe if the grub told the truth in the first place then he would be a citizen by now. This guy is a terrorist - trying to influence parliment by threatening violence. You weakgutted lefties are destroying Australian society. Why dont you, Donna open your house and let this grub reside with you? he does not deserve to be part of Australia and should be deported.

I have no hostility to migrants. I like them and would like more. I think Mr Howard had the best way of dealing with the issue of migration for migrants. I think Rudd has a cynical view of the issue, desiring only good words and votes .. but allowing substantial suffering. Mr Howard would have allowed a minister to decide on an issue. Mr Rudd prefers the clammy hand of bureaucracy.

Let's not forget that Mr Aminov has been waiting 11 years. Mr Rudd has been in office for 1.

Let us not forget it is after one year of Rudd he becomes desperate and sees no future.

Oh please, give these people are break. I heard a story about a single mum who ripped off centrelink as a permanent resident, then got australian citizenship - this is much worse than these poor people who are stateless. 11 years on visas and not entitled to anything, whilst others milk the system, at least lets' be consistent.

There is no doubt that the mess created by the Howard gov's NAZI attitude to immigrants is taking a long time to clean up. Those trying to blame this on the current government only show their ignorance.

Hendo - Your hero is here. Over one year. Nothing has changed. 200 inquiries and still idiots like you try to fob it off back to a previous government. The Rudd immigration policy is the same just with a bunch of flowers thrown in.

Repetitiously offensive, Sydney. There is quite a difference between 1 (One) and 11(Eleven) years. The immigration policies of the Howard NAZIs were designed to appease mongrels like you by abusing defenseless people. Cleaning up the mess is taking time but the Rudd gov is working to at least make it a system that respects Human Rights. After all your heroes were guilty of deporting an injured Australian Citizen simply because she was of "Asian Appearance." Howard and co should be locked up.

Graeme you are a FOOL and a big one at that. There are rules that people like you and me should follow I noticed that you are still living here. These migration rules were also supported by your labor mates so calling Mr Howard's govt Nazi you are also calling your labor mates or comrands nazi's too. YOU HAVE TO WAIT YOUR TURN.

Joe Gatt, Blacktown, or is that Gitt. Your comments are a little garbled so I can't really see if you actually have a point there. 11 years this family has been in limbo. that is inhumane. Labor has changed much of the immigration system. I call the Howard people NAZIs because of the concentration camps like Baxter and Nauru which were a disgrace. I'm still here because I will not be moved by a bunch of NAZIs. Now if you have more to say feel free, you can probably look even sillier if you try.

I imagine many WW2 refugee's who fled Nazi Europe, would hold anyone who obviously is so deluded he believes he can compare Australia's Coalition with a nazi Govt, in contempt....either that , or they would laugh at his naivity with regard to nazi's inhumane acts. Comparing this mans "free" choice to douse himself in petrol to nazi inhumanity is totally ludicrous. To compare detention centres, created by Labor, to nazi concentration camps, is even more ludicrous and speaks to his lack of knowledge about anything to do with the nazi horrors of WW2.

What a disgusting state of affairs, when a politician can go as low as taking pictures of someone who is deeply mentally disturbed, and then to sell it off to the media. To think a man like Bidgood is in a position of trust is outrageous. It just shows what sort of scum bags we have got representing us in parliament.

Did the money go to charity only aftr he was caught selling the photo. If the family has been here for 11 years and are not happy send them back from where they came, but they do not want that because they can not get away with the rubbish they pull here. Now the do gooders will get Australlian citizenship for them and give them extra money to make them happy while many true Australians go without. Henderson once again your employer Rudd give you a bonus for your stupid comments. Jan

Mr Henderson, your comments and preoccupation about comparing an Australian political with the despicable and grotesque NAZI party both offends me and is irresponsible. While i have no particular politicle persuasion, i really cant stand people who use forums of this nature to voice an unrealistic and completely over the top view just to prove their dislike politically. This article was regarding an MP's sick decision to sell photographs of this guy rather than come up with a solution.

Matthew Hannay, Newtown. I could not give a continental flying sideways what offends you. I found the sight of SAS thugs rounding up the Tampa refugees offensive, I found the the lies about "Kids Overboard" and the Concentration Camps at Baxter and on Nauru to be offensive. It is totally NAZI. Howard is just Hitler with the Mustache moved to the Eyebrows. This story is nothing but a beat up about a protest that has it's origins in the NAZI like racism of Howard's policies.

Hendo; now we know what offends you so we can organise more of it! As for your opinions; everyone has the right to be wrong; you just excersise that right more than most on this and other sites. You see yourself as the Judge Roy Bean of livenews. It is also interesting that you constantly prattle on about the Nazi's and liken John Howard as one; when Hitler actually shared the very same dream as your demi gods in the ALP; a United Socialist State. You are likening the wrong PM to Hitler.

Members of Parliament, both Federal and State, need to have the highest sense of proprietry, and James Bidgood is clearly lacking in this regard. He needs to be positioned on the backbench, told to keep extremely quiet, and to not be endorsed as the Labor candidate for Dawson in the next Federal election. If all parties took punitive action against their MPs in this way for adverse behaviour, we'd clean up Parliament and maybe then have more meaningful debate towards creating a better Australia
