There's outrage in Canberra this morning, after a Federal Labor MP photographed a man trying to set himself on fire - and then sold the shot to the media.

James Bidgood has apologised for his actions.

The money will be given to charity.

Liberal frontbencher Joe Hockey has told 2GB’s Ray Hadley it raises serious questions about the MP's character whatever the outcome.

“The fact that an MP instinctively – in this case a Labor MP – takes a photo of a man attempting to kill himself, and then tries to sell it to the media, is the actions of someone who is seriously not fit and proper,” he said.

Dear Live News: How come we are not debating "The $28 billion Schools Assistance bill".Which includes a "National Curriculum" Which the Liberals are blocking in the Senate even though they themselves wanted a National Curriculum when they were in Power! The Heads of the Main Independent schools want it,They will be on the Board that will approve what the National Curriculum will contain.WHATS the PROBLEM with the LIBS.Why are they Blocking??? And WHY??

They object because the National Curriculum has not even been written yet. How can anyone be expected to agree to enforce something which has not been written.

Let's keep this real, once more we see the Fiberals trying to poor petrol on a issue to make it burn. This fool was making a protest, had he been committing suicide he would have poured the petrol and lit the match, he did not because he was not aiming to kill himself. A dramatic protest that crossed the bounds yes, but a suicide attempt, that is a joke, he acted in public to create attention. The problem with the photos was it could encourage other idiots to do this, and they could get hurt.

In defense of the ALP member I'm sure that when he decided to enter politics and join the ALP he didn't see that he would be exploiting the most desperate and needy or making fun of them. What he did is little different to journalists who lie about things or misrepresent things for their employer.

At least he gave the money to charity for heaven's sake! Save your anger for the big picture Joe - there are just soooooo many other things to get angry about with this government!

MP James Bigdood only gave the money to charity because Kevin747 ordered him to, so as to limit the fallout from what hit the fan. Mr Bigdood is just a lowlife. He should seriously consider returning to the UK ASAP. Anyone who lives in his electorate please set the wheels in motion. VOTE HIM OUT.

How come this DILL Pom became an Australian MP ? He has only been here 5 minutes from the UK. Can this bloke go any lower than he did? I will bet A Tbone steak to a Yorkshire pudding that an Aussie would not get a gig in the UK Parliament no matter how long he had lived in Blighty. We have to have standards here even for politicians. Can Mr Rudd please show this Pom the door (of Parlt.)

Paul Keating-Graeme Henderson-Happy Little Gumnut--- What a bunch of hypocrites you lot are. You think it's OK for an MP to exploit someone that is so tormented that he wants to take his own life. It is obvious that the man is badly in need of care and counseling-he doesn't need to be used as a photo opportunity by an unscrupulous politician seeking to make a cheap buck. Shame on you lot for trying to defend the indefensible.

Des - you know that Henderson & co apply different standards to labor. What I want to know is what the original intention with the payment was, and did he only give the money to charity after being pressured by Rudd and if so has he lied to parliment? Not that Labor care about lying to parliment as we saw with Belinda Neal although Kev was very careful not to lie to parliment when he was big noting himself with the Bush G20 incident

Desmond Harris, Beacon Hill. You and Hockey are exploiting some idiot protester. Get real, if it wanted to kill itself it had ample opportunity, and if it was serious it would go somewhere quiet and do it. This was not an attempt at suicide, it was a protest, it may have been a cry for help, but to say it was a suicide attempt is pathetic, at least it was a pathetic attempt at suicide that was obviously planned to fail. Of you are not interested in the truth, typical Lib loser.

Yeah hendo most people protest by pooring petrol on themselves, especially when it has nothing to do with petrol? Pffft... it was attention seeking and this Jesus loving dill of a Labor MP saw nothing but an opportunity to make money. That was seriously the first thing that came to his mind...? Have you heard the Jesus crap that has spilled from this guy's mouth..? "The financial crisis is an act of god", "we are at the end of days", "judgment has been made"... this guy is seriously nuts.

Graeme Henderson-You Galoot you would have been singing a very different song if this happened when John Howard was PM and one of the Coalition MPs tried to sell the photo-you would have called then Nazis. Go and give yourself an upper cut- go on you’ve earned it.

Far be it for me to stick up for a piece of Labor Socialist filth; but he was only following the lead of his boss. 747 lied about the contents of a phone conversation with the President of another Country and leaked it to the media just to big note himself. The old adage "you can't rise above your leader" rings true once again.
